other sources for U-HID-compatible harness?
« on: August 11, 2015, 07:29:51 pm »
The Ultimarc store is closed for a summer holiday, and also needs to charge $16 for a couple of wiring harnesses...

But they look like fairly standard 0.1" spaced headers, is there any other source for compatible harnesses?  Is this something one could get off-the-shelf at Mouser or Digikey, for example (where I need to order my wire disconnects anyway)?

Way too much time searching hasn't turned up anything ready-made, but I wonder if I could make an IDC (insulation displacement connector) ribbon cable, perhaps with something like this.

My main concern is whether I could fit several of these in a row, or whether they would get in each other's way.  But this shop is not far from me, so maybe I'll just take my U-HID down tomorrow and try it!

Rolling your own from scratch with IDC connectors can be succeptible to intermittent connections IIRC.

Two possibilities you may want to consider.

1.  Paradise's 4-wire harnesses here and/or 2-wire harnesses here -- they will fit side-by-side perfectly on a .1" header

2.  An IDE HDD cable ==>euro-style terminal strip==>pre-crimped wires cut from a JAMMA harness or these

Thanks, I will follow those links and have a look-see.

I also found a nifty system at Pololu that lets you quickly and easily make a harness in pretty much any shape... in my case, I'd use this 2x5 housing (five for 69 cents!).

Looks like the wires from the Paradise 4-wire harnesses would transplant easily into those 2x5's.   ;D
