Hello all. maybe you can help me? i have 15 magic resolutions on my machine and everything runs fine except Narc and mortal kombats and possible a few other games that are using that same resolution. in arcade osd the resolution Narc and MK are using bounce and I tried to set the vfreq higher or lower and the bounce is the same speed.  when you play the game there is a slight "bounce" as the image is not stable and there is no way for me to adjust the hold on this sony TV. typically this could be dialed out by tweaking the vhold ever so slightly. Can this be done in arcadeosd by changing one of the setting on the resolution groovymame is using for these games?

Edit:
Here are the two modes that "bounce"

2560 288 55p 54.914 16.200
2560 560 54i 54.002 15.741  > narc and mK seem to use this one.

I thought I had the perfect modeline when I had this same setup under windows XP. And these games worked perfectly but when I upgraded to windows 7 and 7 emudrivers this problem occurred.

Does my modeline need adjusting in vmmaker.ini or is this corrected in arcadeosd?

Current modeline for Kv27120 sony TV
monitor_specs0    15700-16200, 49.50-61.00, 4.100, 4.600, 8.700, 0.180, 0.180, .096, 0, 0, 288, 448

  • Mmmm, arcade classics!
Not sure what you mean by 'bounce', unless you're referring to the interlacing jiggling up/down more than it should? This is a problem I have with interlaced modes on my monitor.

In ArcadeOSD, edit the modeline for the effected mode and increase V Total until you get a stable image. Around 560 seems to be the sweet spot for modes on my monitor, but it may be different for your TV. Save the changes.

Now, since GroovyMAME creates modes on-the-fly, the changes you made in ArcadeOSD will basically be ignored, so you need to turn off modeline generation when playing the effected games. i.e. create a mk.ini and narc.ini in your MAME ini folder, and add the line 'modeline_generation 0'. This may mean that these games run slightly faster/slower when using syncrefresh but it should only be about 3% max, in my experience.

by bounce i mean entire image is jumping like the vertical hold is off...not really scrolling but jumpiing up and down at a very fast rate. unplayable. i dont know what its techincally called. i will have to research that before expecting an answer.

That sounds like the interlacing issue I mentioned. Try what I suggest above and see if that fixes it.

ok please don't give up on me. I edited the vtotal on the 2650x560 resolution lowering to 577 slows the bounce. any lower arcade osd shows it in red and the image goes black and freezes the computer. Higher than the default of 583 makes it "bounce" faster.

It may be that your TV just can't handle the frequency for that mode. TV's usually have a much narrower frequency range than arcade monitors, and the monitor_specs you posted looks a little optimistic to me, but I could be wrong. Take a look at these presets and see if basing your specs off the appropriate one makes any difference:

You will also need to set the crt_range in mame.ini to match.

ok im begging for help here. BEGGING!

To refresh the problem. Mortal kombat games and Narc and possibly others appear to be slightly out of sync. the entire picture appears on the screen. but the entire picture is jumping. like the vhold is off. but there is no adjustment for vhold on this TV.
My setup is i5 3550 > Windows 7 64 bit > crt emudriver > Ati 4870 > Crescendo Tc1600 transcoder > Sony KV27FS120

if narc or mortal kombat isnt playable on a Sony TV please tell me! Cause those are my favorite games.
rCadeGaming helped me alot but he has got tired of my newbie questions and i perfectly understand.
I need to educate myself on modelines and the settings. but i dont know how or where to start

So i basically took what he gave me. And have made zero progress.

Please educate me so i can educate others!

rCadeGaming said "These TV's were designed for NTSC signals (60Hz), so while you might get away with 57Hz, 54Hz isn't happening.  You'll have to compromise with a non-native refresh.  Just be glad there's only a handful of good games with this problem; mostly Midway and Irem games.

So does when he say "this problem" is he referring to my TV not doing 54Hz does that mean i will never be able to play MK on this TV?

my NEW settings

Modeline "2560x448_60 15.7KHz 60.0Hz" 53.190 2560 2792 3032 3384 448 474 479 524 interlace -hsync -vsync
Modeline "2560x256_58 15.7KHz 60.0Hz" 53.330 2560 2792 3048 3392 256 257 260 262  -hsync -vsync
Modeline "2560x240_60 15.7KHz 60.0Hz" 53.200 2560 2792 3040 3384 240 245 248 262  -hsync -vsync
Modeline "400x240_60 15.7KHz 60.1Hz" 8.150 400 432 472 520 240 242 245 261  -hsync -vsync
Modeline "256x224_60 15.7KHz 60.1Hz" 5.290 256 280 312 336 224 235 238 262  -hsync -vsync
Modeline "2560x224_60 15.7KHz 60.0Hz" 53.200 2560 2792 3040 3384 224 237 240 262  -hsync -vsync

I added these with winmodelines and not using Vmmaker

im using a sony KV-27FS120
beautiful picture

added these crt ranges into mame.ini
crt_range0 15600-15900, 55.0-65.0, 4.361, 4.462, 6.466, 0.859, 0.191, 1.367, 0, 0, 224, 224, 0, 0
crt_range1 15600-15900, 55.0-65.0, 4.361, 4.462, 6.466, 0.318, 0.191, 0.891, 0, 0, 240, 240, 0, 0
crt_range2 15600-15900, 55.0-65.0, 4.361, 4.462, 6.466, 0.064, 0.191, 0.127, 0, 0, 256, 256, 0, 0
crt_range3 15600-15900, 55.0-65.0, 4.361, 4.462, 6.466, 1.177, 0.191, 1.049, 0, 0, 0, 0, 448, 448

These settings above changed my mame narc resolution to
Narc
Switchres: [narc] (1) horizontal (512x400@54.82)->(2560x448@54.82)
Mortal Kombat 1
Switchres: [mk] (1) horizontal (400x254@54.71)->(2560x256@54.71)

Sooo..Both of these modes appear to be using 54.xxHz which im told this monitor wont do. how to i lock that out can i force a higher Hz rating? Is that possible?
Thanks in advance.

  • Quote me with care
Did you set "monitor custom" in addition to the crt_range lines?
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

so much i dont know. no it was generic_15. setting to custom fixed it and makes perfect sense now because its not reading my custom lines without that set right?
So much to learn. Well now MK loads at 55hz and so does narc at 55Hz only like .15 HZ off but that makes a difference. is there anywhere you suggest i read up?

Calamity you have helped me yet again. i owe you so much.

so while you might get away with 57Hz, 54Hz isn't happening.

As long as it's not ancient, most TV's will be able to display both a PAL and NTSC signal. Which means anywhere from around 50hz up to about 60hz or slightly higher. Your Sony should be able to handle 54hz easily.
