DK restore?
« on: August 08, 2015, 11:01:43 am »
Just picked this guy up. The monitor is not working, I called our local "arcade repai shop" I guess you could call it that. I told him the monitor is not working and he said, "I cant help you"...lol  ok then...I do NOT plan on keeping this machine at all, just planning on bringing it back to life. I can put a new coat of paint on or just touch up places because its already in ok shape?, give it a good cleaning, and order side art/CP decals, T-molding. Hopefully I can have all that done in a week or 2...my issue is the monitor, any suggestions on that or any of this?

Thanks,

Brian

Get this set. It will look awesome on your machine.

 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Arcade-Donkey-Kong-decal-set-/261950791914?hash=item3cfd7be0ea

Then get some white Nintendo flat t molding for the cab. Mikes arcade has it for a decent price. He might have other things at you want as well.

Tell us about the monitor. Is it glowing in the neck? Is it getting power?

Ok...now that I have actually had a chance to sit down and plug it in the game works...the monitor turns on except it starts flashing after a few min of play and starts turning upside down. Everything has been worked on except the monitor...he had the board recapped so maybe the guy messed that up? He said nothing on the monitor has been touched so maybe its a wire or the back neck of the monitor? I'll male a video on YouTube of it late when I get home...

I got it fixed reading countless threads...now, this original paint is in pretty good shape, should I touch it up or repaint it?  Im afraid it will be impossible to touch it up because of years of dust, cig smoke, ect...I can see the orig paint inside and under some old stickers i pealed off very slow with a razor blade and its def lighter color by a little...I need to order this t-molding and replacement stickers, and clean up the coin door and slots and this thing will be ready to roll...i hope

I would just touch up the really ugly stuff and leave the rest. It's a 35 year old game after all. Just clean everything really well, get new artwork and fix anything mechanically wrong and you should be good.

So people who would be trying to purchase this game from me would rather have it touched up and as original as possible than fresh new paint? If thats the case I need to scrub some more on that one side where something spilled on it and left run marks...I got some head way threw it on the first..

Personally speaking if it were in my hands i'd spend all the time in the world restoring that back to factory fresh.  But thats me, and i'd be keeping it.

This cab is an awesome base for a good factory fresh total restore from the looks of it.  That being said, any conversation of this to anything else but a DK, or a Nintendo drop in kit would be sacrilege

no worries, this machine is staying DK no matter what at least in my hands it is...I think I will just fix the really bad spots with wood chipped off and touch it all up with paint...Im going to order or goto local hardware store and get new mounting screws for the CP and Coin door...I think im going to leave the coin slots alone, they show wear and tear with years of quarters hitting the plates, re finish the coin door with a black coat...or do yall think it will look bad with new painted coin door, some what worn coin slots, with new mounting screws on the CP and coin door?  prob need to redo all or nothing huh?

Bondo the chips, repaint with a fresh coat or two, paint the coin door, pickup new faceplate kits from MikesArcade, grab some new tmoulding there too, replace the art package, clean the buttons and stick, vacuume the inside, wash the monitor, adjust it and do caps/filter cap/B+. Done.

No problem.

I have paint codes in my sticky thread here:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,144583.0.html

But you might want to take a chip down and have them do up a match and a small sample quart yourself. That way if it's off slightly it won't look out of place if you do touch ups.

I figure the best way to go is Bondo, sand, primer, full paint of the blue. But that's just me. To save time you might want to just Bondo, sand, touch up and blend but you'll notice the spots.  You might get lucky and find a spray that matches. A few cans of that after the Bondo might be all you need if you take your time and be careful. You'll get one hell of an end result.

A good attention to detail on my cabs paint job made all the difference from the hellish condition it was in to where it's at now.

Well im stuck...This cabs original paint is still in excellent condition...yea there are dings and scratches that I was able to sand down and touch up...along with 30+ years of dirt that I sanded off with very fine sand paper...It still has the shiny coat on it....I filled in the bad spots with bondo and touched it up...should I just leave it? the only way you can even tell I added paint is when you get natural light at a very tight angle reflecting off it, you can see where my paint does not have the laminate coating..should I just leave it as is or?

Nintendo cabs like that were never painted. That outer colour is a laminate surface like your average kitchen counter tops. If you've touched it up and you're happy with it then keep it like that. If You think it's bad enough to warrant covering the original then go to town.

I think it also comes down to texture. If you for sure see matte spots or glossy spots compared to the finish of the actual cab then you might want to do the whole thing. If not, then screw it, keep it how it is.

That touch up looks pretty good man. Especially the front of the cab near the speaker and coin door.

+1 on Chance's comment about texture. Looks like you got that color match really close. But it's the sheen/texture that can be tricky. Only you can decide that in person but overall your touch up looks good. Just a matter of how far you want to take it.

Curious, what paint brand and code you used?

Curious, what paint brand and code you used?

First off, all these paint codes online are pointless unless they state the Brand, Code, and most IMPORTANT what store they got it from...no store uses the same paint codes even it its the same brand of paint, I wasted a hour learning this fun fact.. :banghead:...Lowes paint codes for the same color are different than Home Depot codes and both are made by Valspar for instance...

I got Clark & Kensington...I went to 2 Ace Hardware stores next to my house because you can only get 1 color per day for 99 cent pints of custom paint. Funny thing is the paint chip I used off my DK came up with different codes at each store...one a smudge lighter than the other..the lighter coat works better on the outside of the cab with the laminate...the darker code was a perfect match for under the control panel where the sides had original paint without the laminate....weird  but here are the codes

Lighter color...ACE hardware...Clark & Kensington, Premium Interior Satin Enamel    D 176, E 165, OO 13

Darker color...all is the same as above except D 187, E 171, OO 15

maybe I should just take that board out under the control panel with original paint without laminite and chop it up into 1/2 inch squares and send them to people..lol

The real problem im having is either to paint the sides like I did the front or not...This is going up for sell as soon as I can figure that out...It would seem its hard to find a DK with original sides not painted over??..but I have already ordered the stickers, t-molding, orange button from MikeArcades that will be here tomm or Friday..I would like to just leave the sides alone and hand over the all paint cans I bought to the buyer and let them decide if they wanna paint it or not, but that would be hard to paint after the side art is on...which every potential buyers has different opinion ...decisions decisions

Did you originally intend to flip this cab? Or did you decide that later? I'm just curious why you don't want to keep it.

LOL new Golden Tee Live...bought a working Silver Strike Bowling. I thought I could turn into a Golden Tee Live but that didnt work...sold that and the profit I bought this DK...which is my first game to restore...prob not the best game to do a "first time restore" on but oh well...gotta start somewhere. And honestly someone else would enjoy this DK more than me, Ive had it 2 weeks and played it twice drunk with the boys...high score on the game is 7,800  :laugh2: yet we can shoot -20+ on GT Live...

I hope you're planning to keep it, it looks to be in great shape.

It might be hard to remove those stickers without damaging the vinyl underneath them.

Got my order from Mikes Arcade today...Orange button, T-Molding, and Sticker Set...the t-molding has a very tight fit except for a few places which I will go get a glue gun I guess (I think the wife has one around here, but might be easier just to buy one than try and find it)...orange button fits correctly but is not a long as the original blue buttons...had to adjust the angle setting on the button switch thing underneath...stickers will go on last...as far as paint goes for the sides, I will be leaving them alone...I have natural light bulbs in my house where these pics are taken and I can barley see the difference in the front compared to the original sides...in the spare bedroom where I keep the game they are regular light bulbs and you cant see the difference at all...I have come to realize what ever you do restoring a game some will like it some will not...I repainted the all the black on the outside of the cab including the original door in the back...I was unable to salvage the white warning sticker on the back under the model plate...now I just need to Order the Side Art, might as well go with the expensive ones...I will prob be going with Mikes Arcade again $85 for both unless yall have other ideas? The more I get done on game, and seeing it come back to life, it might have to stay threw the football season.    These are not the best pics, all i have is the GoPro.
