MagStik Plus not centering.
« on: July 25, 2015, 02:40:13 pm »
Hi guys

Just bought another magstik plus for my ongoing bartop arcade project. I am having an issue where the stick is not centering properly, and is in fact clicking right.  As you can probably understand it is unusable at the moment. I have swapped the microswitches with the up one that was working fine, and the problem still seems to effect right.

Has anyone got any ideas or tips on how to fix this without buying different microswitches or sending it back.

Thanks guys.

Nick

Can't say for sure on what to do because I've never used a mag stick but seeing that it uses a magnet to center the stick rather than a spring, I'd start by checking there.
Break the stick down to get to its centering magnet and see if something has gotten in there or possibly the magnet came unseated.

Hopefully maybe Andy will chime in with a better known issue and fix

I haven't used one in a while but from what I recall the magstick also relies on the microswitches to help it center.  If it's clicking right I would check both the left and right microswitches to see if they are putting out the same force as the others.   I would also check and make sure none of the plastic parts are broken.

The Magstick Plus is just a micro switch based stick. The only special thing about it is its ability to switch 4 / 8 way from above (by pulling and rotating the shaft)

.... And it uses  a magnet for centering rather than a spring.
I realize it's a micro switch based joystick but I'm talking about the centering mechanism here, not the actuation.

Hey guys. Many thanks for your replies.

This stick is different as it is centered with a magnet.

Anyway as per recommendations I stripped down the stick, cleaned and also lubricated all the bits that I could. And.....

Yeah. A fully working not pain in the arse stick!!!!!

Thanks guys. I was losing my cool a bit with it.... Let's see how it lasts.

Glad to hear it worked out well.
One word of caution with the lube,
I once used one of the white greases from lowes and after the while it sort of turned to glue.
Make sure you use a proper lube.
Graphite lubes work very well.
There is a good amount about this subject on the forums here
