PC (mp3) vs. CD jukebox player. Any differences??
« on: January 02, 2004, 12:56:46 pm »
I am in the process of setting up my music collection via virtualjukebox by converting my CDs to mp3's and playing via virtualjukebox.  If the CDs are burned to mp3s at the CD quality rate that is selectable, where is the difference in performance going to be found versus buying a Sony or Kenwood 400 disc CD changer and playing via a home theater system?  If I setup my collect onto a computer and run it through my home theater system speakers, will I get similiar performance versus using a CD changer with the actual CDs inside?
What part of the computer is going to affect the mp3 quality playback the most--sound card?  processor?  or other??  Instead of getting an expensive changer, thinking of upgrading a computer to play via a home theater receiver and using it as a music CD jukebox--any downfalls?  Thanks.

The biggest thing that is going to effect the quality, is the quality of the mp3s.  I used to download them, but stopped, because a lot of them were poor quality.

To answer your question directly...

Consider the software that you are using to play mp3.
Your sound card may certainly affect the quality, that and the connection to the reciever.

You should be concerned w/ the power of the pc.  I think you should be more concerned if you are going to run a lot of other apps as well, thats when I would be "more concerned" with the PC and ram and such.

For some coin, you can build a Hi-Toned SOB.  I have been looking into that lately.  Have you considered building a HTPC?  Sounds like it might be up your alley.

Good luck, and happy new year.
