No Coin Buttons Wanted
« on: July 12, 2015, 01:27:03 pm »
So for my VertiGO cocktail I'm currently working on, I want a minimalist layout of only a 4 way joystick, 2 buttons and the player 1, player 2 start buttons.
Pressing both start buttons will serve as exit.

I may hide a pause button somehow but other than that I do not want any coin buttons on this one.
I plan to just go into he dip switch settings of each game within it's menu in Mame and set to free play.

I don't see a problem with this but I'm just curious if anyone knows of a possible game that may give issue.

The only games on this cab will be vertical 4-ways

Thanks

I haven't personally tried, but people in this old topic seem to think there are incompatible games: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=99254.0
They don't give specifics though...

The solution in that forum was to have your start button double as a coin button.  So, your plan should be fine... you just may have to press "Start" a few times if a game doesn't work.

The other solution would be to go ahead and set up your computer and the games you want before you finalize your design.  That's the route I'm taking... although it's killing me to wait.

Thanks for the info. I will check that thread.
I am in the process of setting everything up before the build is finished so hopefully I'll catch any issues and make good before I'm done.

Plus all if the games I plan on running are already running on my full size cab so I can verify there too.

Thanks

I set one up like this using a keywiz.  Player 2 was the shazaam key, which allowed me to add more admin keys than needed.  If you want player 2 to function normally, then you could add a small button as a shazaam key.  It could even go on the underside of the CP.

Create a script to make holding start drop a coin and pressing both exit.

I did start doing this on my cab, and where I couldn't get 'free play' did as jwwaldre said and made P1 and P2 double as coin insert. But there were definitely games it didn't work on. I've forgotten now what they were because in the end since I'm using touch switches, it at least LOOKS clean (",)

what encoder are you using?

an IPAC2 with shifted keys or a KeyWiz with a shazam button would work.  For example, if you use an IPAC2 you could hold start and press a "fire" button to coin up, hold start and press down on the stick to pause, and hold down P1 start and press P2 start to exit.

I will be using a Kade.
I'm really just trying to keep it as simple as possible for ease of anyone else playing.

Have you looked at possibly just mapping the P1 start button to both the insert coin and start functions?  Best case, it will add a credit and start the game.  Worst case, it will need two presses, and leave a credit in reserve after the second press, so future presses would be back to one. I haven't tried this myself, but that's how I'd expect it to work

Every time I suggest that exact same thing a certain ---smurfy--- moderator comes in and says it doesn't work Omega Race

For the record, I think it'll work fine, especially if shifting inputs is an issue.

All my mame machines I have P1 start + P1 button 1 as coin up (and P2 start + P2 button 1 for player 2 coin).

i map the combo natively in mame, no need for encoder shift functions. Never had an issue.

Yeah, I was planning on mapping in MAME rather than using shift keys.
I'm not even sure if kade has shift keys. I haven't looked into yet

I should clarify.  I set them in MAME too, I only mentioned the shifting thing just in case it was an issue.
I dont know much about Kades, never used them. I dont want to imply there was an issue shifting keys with them or any encoder, was more of a CYA thing.

All of my CPs are as minimal as possible with no admin buttons.  Right now I have a 1 player standard street fight style layout running of an old ipac2 and I every control I need.  I also like to have a wireless keyboard and mouse near by because I tend to use straight windows rather than a full frontend.  I know with the ipac coin 1 is defaulted to Player 1 + Fire 1.

I just map it in the MAME settings to Player 1 Start + Player 1 Button 1 = coin 1.

I don't wire up shift key functionality anymore.  Caused no end of problems with JPACs and I didn't want an extra button on the control panel with the KeyWhiz.

The KADE HWB (Hardware Button) input is used for shifted functions.

It works like the Shazaam input on the KeyWiz.

Mapped all my buttons - didn't want an admin button (or even pause) showing.
