control panel layout
« on: July 11, 2015, 01:16:30 pm »
So im trying to decide between the 6 and 7 button layout. i was gonna go 7 for the 4th button for neogeo, but after some searching today i seen an official neogeo gamepad that had C,D on top and A,B on the bottom in the standard 4 button layout we all know on gamepads. so this got me thinking why add an extra button and have to drill two more holes ( on a 2p CP) when i can use the first two buttons on both rows and still be using an official layout. What are your thoughts on this. go with the 7 button for more of an auth feels since neogeo had 4 on one row. or go with the neogeo gamepad layout to save time and holes.

Go with 8 (2x4 layout) and light the buttons with LED blinky so the appropriate buttons will illuminate with the appropriate colors based on the game you're playing.

Why compromise?  :P

I went with 7 (NeoGeo 4 in a row on top), but discovered that I prefer to use my thumb on the first button on the second row for D rather than the 4th button on top.

The MAME defaults assume you have a 6 button layout starting with 1 on the upper left.  Use that layout and almost all games will be preconfigured.

So, if planning on only running arcade emulators, I'd stick with 6.  If planning on running Steam games or hooking it up to an xbox360, go with 8.  I have hacked x360 fightpads and play steam games on my cab.  I've been screwed over on a few games by not having that 8th button.

I went with this layout for MAME.

1 2 3 7
4 5 6 8

That covers the far majority of games, then I just remap the Neo Geo games to use the top four buttons.  I'm using this layout:  http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout/sega2_s.png

Feels very natural to my hands..  but its not for everyone.
