Rowe R-85 light controller
« on: July 04, 2015, 10:24:53 am »
I've had this problem with my R-85 Starlight jukebox where every fourth bulb in the infinity lights wasn't working.  I determined that it wasn't the bulbs partly because when I would switch two bulbs, the working bulb would stop working and vice versa.  There is no flash or movement with the music.  As I've posted before, my light controller seems to be missing part of the slider switch control:

(this is an old picture, I've since cleaned it up)

I soldered a jumper wire between the two middle contacts, essentially permanently setting it to "Flash."  There was no difference in the light display.  Same bulbs were out, no movement.

I figured there must be some problem either in the light controller or in the connection to the amp to keep Flash from working.  No big deal, as long as I can have all the bulbs on, I guess I don't really care if they move or not, so I moved the jumper wire to the bottom two contacts to set it to "On."

Initially, I was very pleased to see that now all of the lights in the cabinet were lit.  My pleasure was short-lived however, because as soon as I played a record, every fourth bulb would went out again!  When the record stopped, the bulbs would all re-light.  I found this occurred whenever the cam switch to turn on the amp was tripped. I thought, OK, since I don't have Flash set, I can just unplug the molex connector to the amp, right?  Nope.  When the connection between the light control module and the amp is unplugged, every fourth light turns off and stays off.

What is going on? It seems like a problem in the light control module, but I can't seem to figure out what. I've moved the sensitivity slider from one extreme to the other and everything in between with no changes in behavior.  I've looked for cold joints on the light control board and resoldered a few, but so far no dice.  Has anybody seen something like this before or have some suggestions as to where I can start looking for a solution?

Hello Adjuvant,

The problem with the light control unit will be down to the switch and also that one of the triacs or transisators will be faulty. Be warned to use the correct 14 volt lamps (not 12 volt often found in the lamp holders) or you will burn out the connectors or the unit.

We do repairs on these all the time.

Alan
