Pac Drive. How does it work?

I have a pac drive and I've just finished putting some LEDs in my control panel. Just wondering what it references to light up the LEDs? Is there a mame file that maybe I haven't got? I am using Mala which has a plug in already. I think I've done everything the ultimarc site says to. It couldn't be more straight forward. But it's not working properly

If I check the test boxes in the hardware config section, the correct LEDs light up. Also, if I enable attract mode, that works fine. Without attract mode, when I start mala, all the LEDs blink briefly and then only button one is illuminated, which doesn't change if I scroll through the playlist, which is what should be happening.
