U360 Id issues
« on: June 07, 2015, 03:53:53 pm »
I followed the guide on ultimarc website to change ids of joysticks and now mapping software can't find any. Now what?
By the way I started the mapping software as admin.
See photo. You can see that windows sees both joysticks but mapping software does not.

EDIT: Just noticed I can move cursors inside the box, but can't program it. Error 0x0: Failed to transmit data to Ultrastick

Try unplugging all joysticks, then plug joy #1 in, start the mapping software. Joy #1 should be found. Exit the software, plug joy #2 in, start the software. Stop the software, plug in joy #3, start the software. Exit the software, plug in joy #4, start the software.

Thank you that worked somewhat. Ultra map sees the 2nd joystick now but 1st still no go. I can move it inside the red square but can't program it

That's strange. Normally you should be able to program the sticks after the software has detected them. Try the unplugging method again, but program each joystick and then exit the software.

The one with Id 1 won't get recognized by ultra map no matter what order I plug in or if it's the only joystick plugged in or if restart close plug in run as admin, and etc. I can move it inside the box but ultramap claims nothing is plugged in.

Do you use an USB hub ? If so, try plugging joy#1 directly into the computer's USB.

Other than that, I'd try to install it on another computer. If worst comes to worst, perhaps it really is a faulty joystick. If it doesn't work on two computers, you probably will have to contact Andy from Ultimarc.

No, I don't use USB hub right now. They plug directly to computer, at the moment at least.
Thing is they both worked fine, until I assigned the id to the one that shows properly now and the other joystick freaked out for no reason after I plugged them both in at the same time!

I'd try to install joy#1 on another computer then. If it works, assign id#1 to it, unplug all joys from the mame computer, plug joy#1 in, start ultramap and see if it recognizes it.

Did you try a Firmware update?

I can't update firmware if the UltraMap doesn't see the joystick.

I'm getting tired and annoyed with this. I connected the joysticks to another computer and it's reversed there. Joystick that's not  recognized on one computer is recognized on the other, but then there other is not. I can move the little cross of both of them though. Windows see them both as joystick 1 & 2 so I don't think they have the same id.

Just to humor me, and because I have got no other ideas : Plug each joystick into the computer that recognizes it, assign one joy stick id#1, the other id#2.
Unplug both joysticks, plug joy with id#1 into the MAME computer, start Ultramap, hopefully it is recognized. Try to program it. Exit Ultramap, plug joy#2 in, start Ultramap. see if both joys are recognized now.
My theory is that Windows doesn't care about the id's, it maybe is just looking for a joystick. Ultramap looks for the id's, so if you connect two joysticks with the same id ...

From the Ultimarc site :

Up to 4 UltraStik 360s can be used on one PC. If you are using more than one UltraStik via USB, you MUST do the following before connecting player 2,3 or 4 joysticks.
Assigning an ID:
When the joysticks are supplied, all are set to an ID of ONE. You must change as required so IDs in use are unique. This is how to do it:
Plug ONE UltraStik 360 into the PC via USB.
Start the UltraMap software.
Click on "Assign ID" Select the required ID, 2, 3 or 4.
Unplug and reconnect the USB cable.
Repeat with each joystick as required.
After each one has been assigned with a unique ID, all can be connected to USB.

I have change the ID on #2 on one computer to #1 and the #1 on another computer to #4 and neither computer sees them both at the same time! I can move the cursor for both of them, but on both computers only one is visible at a time and only one is programmable. On both computers windows recognizes the hardware correctly and I can move the cursor inside the box. I'll try to program the firmware in each of them as it was suggested earlier since I have access to both of them from different computers.

Does Ultramap recognize both joysticks on each computer if only one stick is plugged in ? Like in : Start Ultramap without any joystick plugged in, plug in joy#1, scan for joysticks, joy#1 is recognized. Exit Ultramap, unplug joy#1. Start Ultramap, plug joy#2 into a different USB port, scan for joysticks, joy#2 is recognized ?

If that's the case, try starting Ultramap on the MAME computer with no joysticks plugged in, plug in joy#1, scan for joysticks, plug in joy#2 too, scan for joysticks, both should be recognized and programmable.
Also remember to always plug the joysticks into the same USB ports (let's say you have 3 USB ports A,B,C, joy#1 should always go into port A, joy#2 should always go into port B, don't mix them up).

If nothing helps, I would use both computers to assign id#1 and id#2 to the joysticks, then uninstall the joysticks completely from the MAME computer. Plug joy#1 in, let Windows install it, unplug it. Start Ultramap, plug joy#1 in, scan for joysticks. Joy#1 should be recognized and programmable (just try to program it with a different map). Exit Ultramap.
Unplug joy#1, plug in joy#2 into a different USB port, let Windows install it, unplug it. Start Ultramap, plug joy#2 in, scan for joysticks. Joy#2 should be recognized and programmable.

Exit Ultramap. Unplug joy#2. Start Ultramap, plug joy#1 in, scan for joysticks. Joy#1 should be found. Plug joy#2 in, scan for joysticks. Both joysticks should be recognized and also be programmable.

If that doesn't work, contact Andy@Ultimarc.

Definitely hit up Andy at Ultimarc if you havent already. I had a similar issue with four U360s. I purchased four originally, accidentally broke a PCB connector on one of them, and had Andy send me a new PCB board. When I got it, the issue was that the original sticks I got had an older firmware than the PCB I just received. UltraMap recognized the three original sticks, but not the new one. When I switched it, UltraMap then recognized the new joystick, but not the three already there. I had to return all four PCBs back to Andy so he could update them. Apparently you cant update the firmware on your end. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply, that issue is still 'fermenting' until I'm less sour about it and ready to give another go. I really hope I don't have the issue you experienced and don't have to send anything anywhere, that's the last thing "I am looking forward" to. I just wish things "just" worked. All the shipping, waiting, replacing, taking apart, asking makes me very unhappy. Now I'm waiting for parts from akishop.jp and it turned into pain just like my last order from one of the vendors here. Their website says one thing and then it turns it's not like they claim and all they offer is "apology".
Sorry about the little rant. I guess still sour about the issue being unresolved.

Andy is very good with communication and shipping. Remember that this hobby of ours is not an easy quick fix, and you'll be tweaking stuff for years!

Did you make sure you are running Ultramap as Administrator?  On windows 7 that was the only way I can get it to work.  Without running it as Administrator the application would open but would run weird and sometimes crash.

You could check the joysticks in Windows first. If you open Device Manager and then expand the USB Controllers entry, you will find them listed there as "composite device". On each one right click and "properties", "details" "hardware ID". The PID of these should be either 050n (older version pre-Feb 2015) or 051n (current version) where n is the device number. So you can check they are all different.

Then try right click and "uninstall" each one. Then "scan for new hardware".

Then in "devices and printers", right click on one of them and select "game controller properties" and they should all be listed there. On each one in turn open each and test the buttons respond.

I'm going to start a new thread for this, as I'd hate to derail this one any further.
