Thats a nice looking box. Speaking as someone living in a developing country, there definitely could be a market for something like that. Although at $169 per unit I hope they have a lower price point in mind for there intended market.

My first thought about the "Chip" was I may could find a way to do something here to help a local school. Mame is usually something I try up just because.

My first thought was not mame. I end up trying to run Mame on just about everything I play with. Because why not?

I'm always looking for interesting linux boards. This one seems particularly cheep and small so I thought I would share as it seemed like something people in this community may take interesting.

I figured people here would be interested. Yotsuya's, using one for a version of your high score board is a good idea.

I back it to see is I could use them to build computer lab in a local school here in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. I'll definitely but DOS box on it for all the simple free ware educational games. This custom versions of the Free DOS operating system is a good example of making good use of older educational games. I'v also been playing around with the idea to find a very affordably business model for local people to have technical training centers. Using this model but with cheep more modern hardware.   

I'll probably try sticking name on it as well, just because I can.

I have no plans to ever build one, but it could be use full to guys who do Micro Arcade projects. It's cheeper and smaller then a Pi and the GPIO's would make it a easier to hook up controls to then a smart phone.

Same here... for $9 a pop I can think of a couple of my projects this will go straight into. The add-ons are cheaper than I expected making that HDMI module very attracive but I hope no one is expecting the world from this device. Afterall it's still a 1GHz ARM at the end of the day.

Good point. Just like the Pi 2 isn't just $35....

yes & no.

my first pi, the original model B did cost more.
The place I bought it from charged me like $10 shipping.
And i needed a power adapter.

but that was when they first came out and I didn't have that type of phone charger but I had an hdmi to dvi adapter already and spare USB keyboards & mice.
all in all my first rpi $35 computer probably cost me $55.

I got my RPI2 when they came out and still feel I paid too much for shipping/tax ($45 total) but didn't need anything else.
MCM just had a $5 shipping special so I ordered another RPI2 for $40 shipped.

I got enough spare parts in totes these days where I don't need to buy anything, but someone new to this stuff wouldn't have it on hand or know where to get things cheap & buy's the $100 to $150 rpi kits.

I'm a big believer in parallel multi-core systems myself. 3,120,000 CPU's for the top contender is nothing to sneeze at. It'd be a might hard to shove that into your eyeball though.

Playing Gauntlet Legends at 100% might not be what we want. It's like knowledge about the universe. Once we reach 100%, MAME devs will go fdestory everything there is about MAME,  complicating the entire system and sending all of us back to square one.

It would be a toss up. There are probably more cheep used composite TV's then Cheep used VGA monitors here in Dar Es Salaam, but the price of electricity would make the VGA monitors the better long term deal.

100% agree about the connector being to expensive. No way a VGA adapter should be more expensive then the computer. Unless there's some copyright royalties I don't know about.  That said, the brand new LED television in my living room has a composite input that I could use.
Edit: The Gert VGA 666 – Hardware VGA for Raspberry Pi is £6.00 or $9.25 US Dollar. That about the same as the chip VGA adapter so it may be a fair price.

I immediately thought of the CHIP i'm getting next month with only composite out.

I have two coming but only bought one VGA adapter.

I was indecisive about getting a VGA or HDMI out, so I held back. I'm hoping they'll sell those seperately later on.

I want to replace the crappy video player in the van with this and the monitor is composite only anyways. I also have a mobile network that will see the other CHIP I bought. I hope the decoder works well, otherwise I'll have to use a $50 Pi.

Assuming you play 1 hour a day (which you won't after the novelty wears off) then CRT will use 17 cents more electricity per month than the LCD would. Assuming the LCD cost $50 it would take 25 years to hit the break even point. Of course the LCD and this joke chip will both be long dead before then and the bartop it was put in will have been in the trash for at least a decade.

I just got mine.

My initial first impression are the composite video quality is poor, the composite standard composite cord is to short, and I wish the single USB was a double. 

I ordered an additional composite cord that is longer and a VGA shield that I haven't tested yet. Because there is only one USB port, I need to go to a thrift shop to get a USB key board with a built in USB Hub.

In the short time I have played with it, I think for most users it will be a good option for embedded devices like digital signs. It is clearly designed for use with a TV's.

I have been working on an idea to build a low cost, low import, computer lab and this may fight right into my planes. The Raspberry Pi line up offers a lot more, but at this price point the fact that wifi is included may make this worth investigating.

Played with it a bit. I ordered a powered USB hub for the keyboard and mouse, but I'm a little iffy on the quality of the VGA. I have some lines on the monitor I don't see when it's hooked up to the Pi.
