  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
I have an old pair of Bose 101 outdoor speakers laying around and want to put them in my vigolix.  What's the best way to mount them and get the best sound from a vigolix cab?

I've seen some cabs that drill small circles via a food strainer to let the sound out of the sides of the cab...

Any advice?

I've noticed that some people have taken the speaker outside the speaker box and directly mounted them to the cabinet wood.  Doesn't the casing the speaker was designed for create the great sound?  Meaning that if I take the speaker out of the housing and drop them into the cabinet would the sound quality go way down?

Got pics of your speakers and cabinet and where you want them to go?  Would help a lot.

And yes you do lose some of the sound quality decasing them, but for video games not a huge deal in my opinion but ymmv.
My Projects:
MisSpent Youth a Vigolix bartop,  Little Bastard a rotating tablet/display bartop,
Pin-Dog a mini pin-cab on vpforums.org  Star Wars a wedgehead pincab on vpinball.com

Sure...I've attached the photo of my expanded vigolix...it's about 60" high; 21" wide control panel for 2 player.

I'm pretty close to finishing it up...my joystick and buttons; side art; marquee;marquee light are all in.  I also have Lepai LP-2020A+ Tripath TA2020 Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Amplifier to feed into the speakers.  Just need to figure out where to put the speakers.

Thanks

  • Insufficient facts always invite danger.
Duct tape.

Seriously though - how about mounting them inside the cabinet around the control panel level and just route or drill some holes for the sound?

And to add to that I would put them on a shelf and use plumbing strapping to hold them in place.  I have installed speakers by screwing through the wood and into the speaker case, but not sure I would want to do that to those, a little to nice.

I just used "Industrial Strength Extreme" Velcro from Lowes on a project due to time constraints (would rather have made a metal bracket).
I was impressed enough that I'll use it again in the future.
Just make sure you clean the surfaces thoroughly with something like isopropyl alcohol and allow it 24hrs to cure before pulling on it.

IMO, the best sound comes from mounting the speakers at ear level on each side of the cab.
If newer shmups with quality soundtracks will be played on the cab, I'd put them on the outside of the cab on each side of the monitor (in their current housings).
If only playing classic arcade games, I'd put them below the monitor for cosmetic reasons.  Maybe make a speaker grill to put in front of them covered with grill cloth.
Old games didn't have very good speakers in them anyway.  :P

EDIT:
if I take the speaker out of the housing and drop them into the cabinet would the sound quality go way down?

Yes, unless you build a housing of the same volume of air space into the cab.
Any ports would also need to be replicated.
(I did this on the Neo Geo cab linked in my sig)
