Christmas in July for the Community
« on: May 03, 2015, 07:18:50 pm »
What is Christmas in July?
Christmas in July is my proposal for the arcade gaming community to come together and support the people that make our arcade gaming possible.

Why
Unfortunately we live in a monetary society. The people doing a lot of the heavy lifting always need more time, or the right resources to make them more efficient in what they are doing.

The Proposal
  • You nominate a project or person that helps out the greater community.
  • We the community then donate/sponsor that person or project.

The nominees
The nominees, can write up a one liner if they had $xxx what the money would be used for.
It also may open dialog that if say hardware x was needed for some testing, once the testing was done it could be passed onto the next developer.

Tacking
We can setup a poll or separate web site to track the donations and nominees.
Perhaps we can have set amounts. If you donate $5, $10, $15 you get a some sought of bling on your profile.

What are your thoughts. Even if all us donated the price of a cup of coffee we could make a big difference.

Can we make this happen?

If I had $500, I would fly PinballJim in for next year's ZapCon.

Do I win?

I forgot the stretch goal: $1000, and Xiaou2 comes as well.

a mini kick starter for BYOAC? Pass.

When I dont have the money to do what I want to do I find another way to do it, or save up. I see the good intentions in the post, but what works on paper doesnt always work in the real world. I've sent people buttons, sticks, art, etc but I dont think I'd ever send anyone any cash.

I'm with Malenko on this one.  But if Saint needs some additional funding to keep the site going, I'd gladly donate.  Although the thought of sending Jim across country as a hired thug has piqued my interest.  I'd donate for that, hell I'll be the driver. ;)

I think he would deliver, but both the kickstarters I've funded are overdue by a year or more.
I don't want to read excuses why you couldn't deliver on going to the barcade on time.

Yeah, what are the rewards and stretch goals, Lew? If you get overfunded, will you go out and eat tacos afterwards?

The way I am reading this, this plan sounds like it is giving cash to developers to help them roll out projects. In that sense, I would think that there is more of a need of labor help from trusted people. Wouldn't it be more beneficial for them to just start an "I need help!" thread in these cases?

Maybe if there are examples where cash is the primary problem stopping an useful program or tool from being available to me, I would consider. For things that are only gonna be turned around and sold to us, I would suggest that those people pick themselves up by their bootstraps.

That's how I read it, too. In that case, I'd rather the "inventor" go the Kickstarter route. As I've seen on some other sites, mainly Pinside, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I have the best intentions just to have a fund raiser and give the community more knowledge of the great work people are doing.

The thread was to gauge the level of interest and feedback from develops and the community and from your feedback you all have your reasons for not participating. That's fine the best alternative mentioned was the I need help thread so let's monitor that.

Perhaps my wording was wrong in this thread. My thinking was we live in a great open source community however in this case we will be donating cash or hardware.

Are you trying to tell me the Taco Bell tacos in Texas are better than the Taco Bells here?

My goal is to raise $10,001 for my local barcade trip. The breakdown is as follows:

Transportation - party bus with hot tub - $1,000
Quarters to play video games - $1
9 College girls "working" their way through college - $9,000

If you donate up to $50 or under: You will have a do-good feeling which will last at least 10 seconds
If you donate up to $51-$250: I will send you a text of the video games I played
If you donate $250 or more: I will send you a pic from the party bus

If I raise more than the amount needed, I will help more girls!

Pro-tip: founding a state on the premise of "whites only" means the food is gonna have a bad time.

Are you trying to tell me the Taco Bell tacos in Texas are better than the Taco Bells here?

I'll give Taco Bell a pass as they're fairly consistent everywhere.  Other chains were always an exercise in "are you sure?"

"Give me a sandwich with everything on it."

"Banana peppers?"

"Yes, everything."

"Jalapenos?"

"Yes, everything."

"Are you sure?  No refunds."

"YES, GODDAMIT."

"Okay, we're gonna have to go find a can of jalapenos."

I believed this firmly until I was told to stay away from the Taco Bell in Tifton, Georgia.  I figured hey, it's Taco Bell.  All they do is stock like five ingredients and mix-and-match them anyway.  It.  Was.  Rank.

That said, I've never been back since.  To that Taco Bell, or to Tifton.  Or Georgia, come to think of it.

There's only one thing I'll eat and enjoy at Taco Bell - chicken baja chalupas.  Staff has argued with me at least 30% of the time that, "we don't make those and have no idea what you're talking about" and googling it reveals they're constantly taking it off and on the menu.

During my brief flirtation with being non-obese, I looked up the calories on those things.

 :o

Don't look up the calories.

Went to Taco Bell this afternoon. Most bizarre bad experience I've had in a long time. The place was completely non-busy, about one new person coming in every 2-3 minutes. Yet the staff was so incredibly slow at making tacos that the wait line for people waiting for their order filled half the dining room. Fully staffed kitchen, I didn't wait in any line and yet ended up waiting over 15 minutes for my tacos. They also never called out names or numbers, so you had to guess when a tray was done, and if it was yours to begin with. Hard to explain, but employees were just all awkwardly silent and slow. I ended up missing one taco, had 1 extra griller instead, and for some reason was given a random taco shell filled with nothing but dry fritos. I would have said somthing but there were over a half dozen people waiting for their food. I didn't want to stick around another 10-15 minutes to get my order fixed.

 :dunno

Sigh....

On a trip long ago headed into Canada, I got an itch for a bit of Asian so I hit up a highly recommended establishment while in Oregon.

It can only be described as a restaurant operated by an individual whose knowledge of Chinese cuisine is limited only to what was verbally described to them.

Chow Mein was fabricated from Spaghetti lightly fried(?!) and covered in a hodge podge of vegetables, none of which is actually found in any Asian dish, Chinese or otherwise. An extraordinarily watery tomato sauce spiced with, what I was only able to assume, a blend of chili and mustard powder topped off the whole mess.

The fried rice was, at best, a Rice-a-Roni clone with chopped up deli meat (tasted suspiciously like Prosciutto) corn, onions and the same mystery chili/mustard powder blend.

I'll give Taco Bell a pass as they're fairly consistent everywhere.  Other chains were always an exercise in "are you sure?"

There is (was?) a Taco Bell on I-80 near the Gold Ranch Casino in Nevada. I worked for Taco Bell years ago and seen some real ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- holes. That one made me cringe, even after not working for the company for almost twenty years. The worst was this underlying stench that seemed to overwhelm even the caustic smell of the food there. It smells slightly of sewage with a sweet undertone of rotten eggs. The smell permeated everything and was most prevalent with the soda.  I refused to eat that junk but my buddies chowed down on that crap. I ended up driving my buddies the rest of the way back to Sacramento as they hung out the car windows vomiting.

Don't look up the calories.

 :banghead:

Why I love fast food -

Two chicken soft tacos - 320 calories.

One Taco Bell Chicken Taco Salad - 780 calories.

I have yet to go to a Taco bell that didn't take less than 15 mins. to get me my food.
I just don't understand it.
it's like a universal rule that everyone at taco bell has to move at a snails pace.
And get your order wrong. :banghead:

The only time I even go to one is when I take my kids somewhere.
And no matter what there always seems to be a taco-bell tucked into a corner, at rest stops, & hell, even the Strong Arcade Museum.
all of them manned by people that don't seem to care half your order is getting cold while the other half isn't even started. :soapbox:

Yeah I just can't believe that the food you get from Taco Bell is crappy, seems absolutely insane......... you know because it's so expensive and they pay their employees so well.  ::)
Finished: 2 bartops and a cocktail
Not-Finished: 1bartop, 2cocktails, and 2 stand ups.

The food itself is actually pretty good.
As long as you get to it before it congeals. ;D

I recently discovered the Cantina Power Steak Burrito.
It's real food with recognizable ingredients as opposed to the usual Taco Bell mush.
