Lexan w/ controls on 3/4" MDF
« on: December 27, 2003, 11:24:04 pm »
I contructed my cabinet and CP with 3/4" MDF and was wondering if i put Lexxan on the top of my CP will i have probelms mounting the controls due to the added thickness the lexan adds?  '

If so i guess ill either sand it down or counter sink the botton of the cp with bolts to raise up the buttons or somthing.

Thanks for any help guys :)

Depends on how think the lexan is, but yeah, joysticks won't be up far enough if you go past a 3/4".  You'll want to route out the bottom of the CP where the joystick bases mount for sure.

Buttons are pretty long/deep though...I wouldn't imagine you'd have any problems with them.

I built a control panel using 3/4 inch MDF and 3/8 inch Lexan.  All the controls worked fine, and I didn't have to modify anything.  I've got limited experience with arcade control panels, so maybe if I'd routed the bottom of the CP the joysticks would stick further up or something and I'd like it more -- but I can't really tell right now.  I did have to cut out a hole in order to use the Oscar Controls joystick mounting plate, but otherwise I didn't have to route anything out.

In retrospect, I probably should have used 1/8 inch Lexan, I think.  3/8 was way too hard to work with.  If you've never used Lexan before, you should read some about working with it before you start.  Let me know if you want some (hard-learned) tips.

My CP is 3/4 MDF with 1/8 lexan. 1/8 lexan is good because you can use a "high lip" trackball, recess the mounting plate down into the MDF flush, and the lip will rise up through the lexan and be FLUSH.

It looks awesome. Sorry, no pics on hand on this computer.

I used 3/4 MDf with 1/8 lexan.  I recessed the joysticks in the MDF a bit so they would protude more.
