About to start a driving cab. Mame or xbox360 or what
« on: April 26, 2015, 05:57:17 pm »
Im about to get a San franciso Rush cab, with the chair etc and wheel/pedals/shifter.
I' ll be using a 27" TV

Is it worth fighting with MAME? Can I play Ridge Racer? Daytona USA? Rush? Outrun? etc?
Ive been fighting for the last 30 minutes to get Daytona USA working with MAME and had no luck

Or should I just put an xbox 360 in it  and use a 360 wheel/pedals which I already have?
Im very familiar with Mame, I have an arcade cab and a 3 screen pinball cab so I know what im doing.

cant really decide.........

Don't use mame for Daytona USA. You want m2 emulator for that.

If you have a force feedback wheel you will get that with m2 emulator and supermodel

Mame does not have any force feedback

Perhaps read the sticky and it will give you all the options

Some of the best Sega offerings on XBLA have also been delisted, so unless you already have the purchases on your account, you can't readily get them.  Daytona USA, Outrun Online Arcade, Sega Rally Revo, all gone. :(  After Burner Climax too, though that's not a driving game.

the answer really lies in what you want to play. My driving seat has a wheel thats compatible with PS3, XBOX360, and PC (Fanatec) so I use all 3 with mine. You can pick up an extra PS3 and 360 for a song.

I'd say go PC. You'll be missing out on tons of arcade racing gems if you stick solely with a 360, particularly the Sega Model 2 & 3 games. Also, going down the PC route (providing it's powerful enough) opens up a whole world of home console emulators (like Dolphin, PCSX2, Demul and PPSSPP to name but a few) and all the great arcade racers available on them. A lot of the games you can play on them now actually look a lot better than they did back in the day, thanks to the magic of upscaling and other graphical tricks. PC is also the only way at present that you can play the original Outrun with fully working FFB, using the Cannonball C++ rewrite.

I've been playing Outrun, TurboGT, WEC lemans, pole position etc on my PC with keyboard and as much fun as they are, I think id rather go with the upgraded graphics of the 360. I also already own a very nice wheel and pedal set for it.

I may well get a "standup" pole position cab for MAME/Supermodel etc with a PC in it, but this SF Rush sit down cab will be for 360, ive just about decided.

Are there some examples of real arcade cabs turned xbox360 cab on here? I couldn't see any just some nasty looking woodwork or metal framework attempts. I want to incorporate the wheel and pedals into the cab seamlessly which is going to mean detaching the shifter from the wheel casing and moving it next to the seat where the RUSH shifter is.
I'll post some pics when I really get started

If it weren't for already owning a wheel, I'd recommend the PC/PS2/PS3 route.
Easy to find Logitech wheels work for all 3.

The xbox wheel won't have force feedback on PC.

Thank you Microsoft for dropping the ball on that one.  And they PROMISED it back in 2009 too.

Here's the thing about that though.  There have been high-end pc racers released that use FF on the 360 wheel... so it's in there, but Microsoft never made it public.  Kind of a dick move, but then again, considering they discontinued the wheel almost immediately after releasing it due to overheat issues it's understandable.

The original outrun didn't have directional force feedback, only a motor that shook the entire steering wheel mechanism side to side. (basically a shaker motor)

It's possible to hook up that and the lights using Howard's Mamehooker program.

On the deluxe version, the whole platform moved which IIRC is where the feedback info in Cannonball is derived from.
I dunno if the outputs for the deluxe version are hooked up in MAME.

Yeah.  And while there are open source solutions for Xbox 360 controllers like those in Linux, I imagine there's not much motivation to research and develop FF support for a wheel that didn't see that much of a massive release.

If my code is in there it "sort of" is.  There wasn't a lot of info so I just had to wing it so it'll output direction and motor strength.  Honestly though the resolution is so low that it doesn't translate well to FF.  The deluxe versions used some sort of a worm gear system that tilted the cab, so it isn't super useful and cannonball is a better solution.

The wheel Malenko has is newer and compatible xbox360.

The one you linked to does indeed have real ffb, but is only compatible with the original xbox.
It's the best that was available for the original xbox, but it won't work on anything else.
As far as I know, the only wheels that were compatible across various platforms of that era including the original xbox didn't have ffb.

I need the left to work as button A for burnout3 boost.

the paddle shifters are LB and RB (buttons above the triggers on the back of a 360 controller).  Remapping controls would be game specific.

Consoles: Where control remapping is a crap shoot!

You can't use a wheel for Crazy Taxi on 360 either, because you none of the pre-set mappings are compatible with the wheel!
