Great minds think alike!  Was thinking about this project too.

Glad to hear that you landed a new job

I'm on the East coast. Who did you sell them to?

D

Thanks.  :D.  Pauline went to NH for a guys daughter (who was so happy christmas morning, so that made it worth it) and FIFJ went to NJ to a collecter.  I miss them both.  I'll rebuild.  But atleast they are happy. :)

Cool to see an update.  I'm a huge Zelda fan and this build inspired me to get into the hobby. Can't wait to see version 2

Mmmm, I can't wait for v2.0 either. I was massively inspired by this build. I've got a Nintendo super system main board I've been thinking of making a Link to the Past cab with.

DO IT!  If you need a triangle speaker panel...I can make you up one. :)

Thanks guys!  I've been working on one character illustration a day the past week (recreating NES artwork to vector) Trying to build my library so I can put the artwork together.  Only a few more images to go and I should be able to start designing.

Zelda 2.0 is taking shape! We've had some unusually nice weather the last few days and I took advantage of it. I'm so happy to have this cabinet coming back life again.  I'm really happy that it's 5/8 wood this time around too.

I'm getting faster at building these nintendo cabinets, this is my fourth one! Haha.  I've run into a lot of problems this time around tho.  I need to find a place that sells cabinet grade wood....the 5/8 Home Depot sanded ply really is junk....and makes more work in the end.  I was pressured into taking a really warped piece of plywood by a couple of helpful employees who wanted to help me load my wood onto my cart....instead of letting me carefully select my own stuff.  they didn't mean any harm, it's just that I've been fighting bowed wood a lot on this build.  it's forced me to do some stuff I wouldn't normally do.  But that's okay, that's what putty is for. Haha.

I'm going to try something new on this cabinet.  In the past Ive built up layer after layer of primer, blocked it straight by hand, then primed it again.  This time I'm going to house a high build automotive polyester primer called feather fill.  I've used it a lot in the auto refinishing business.  I have HVLP primer gun with a 2.0 tip, so it should flow nice through that. The stuff is ridiculously thick.   With this high build primer, I should be able to prime the whole cab in one shot...then block it straight once.

So here's where I'm at.  I have my stencil right next to the cab for reference.  I made it before I let go of my last Nintendo cab.  I plan on four more Nintendo builds after Zelda....including replacing the cabs I lost. So this stencil will come in useful.

I guess I don't know the vernacular but what does "block it straight" mean?  Is that the sanding smooth phase?

Sorry, It's an autobody term.  It means to sand the primer with a long block in order to straighten out the surface of the cabinet.  By using a block, you are ensuring that there will be no high and low spots....and if there are, they will be identified so you can either fill the low spot, or level out the high spot.  I posted some pictures of me sanding earlier in this thread so you can kinda see what I'm talking about.

If you block your primer by hand, instead of just rolling it and leaving it at that, it ensures a very straight, ripple free surface. ( You have to use a sandable primer)

Using a power sander will not achieve the same result, as the sander will just remove material and cause the surface to have waves as the sander moves over it.

Oh, I just noticed that your base looks like it might be taller than sock?

If so, you must be part of the same "Nintendo cabs are just short enough to be uncomfortable for standing" club.  :)

haha, no it's 3.5 inches high like a stock cab.  I am 6'2 tho....so yeah, I'd much rather play on a Nintendo cab sitting on a stool.  Otherwise Im spread eagle....and that's just awkward for everybody. Haha

Thanks! It's been on my mind a lot over the year. I hate leaving things unfinished. I been slowly chipping away at recreating artwork.

Also, Im back to square one as far as what I want to use to power it.  I'm thinking I'm going to do a PC.  The reason being is I'm going to be limited in space and I'd like to use this as a Mame cabinet.  I lost my arcade SD with Pauline getting sold and probably won't have another one for awhile. I'd like to play some of those games again.

Although, I thought this looked interesting......

It has a VGA output and scanlines.

Wyo's link goes to a DIY Famicom clone console. (no game ROMs)

Howard bought a multi-cart which he didn't link to or mention the vendor because that would violate Rule 5. (unlicensed game ROMs on the cart)

Different thread.  There was recent discussion of this board.  I'll try to dig up the thread.

Just added the details today.  Cut the slot for the t molding as well.  It's pretty much ready for the high build polyester primer.  Just need to fill some spots with putty first.  I need to find a booth to spray it, so that'll be the only hang up as far as when.   I ran out of wood to make the back door....so I'll do that later.   I still need to cut the handles in the back.  I'll do that later too.  Probably this weekend since its supposed to be nice.  I've developed some bad habits building these nintendo cabs....I should be doing all these cuts before I assemble.  Guess it's just impatience.

Great job so far!

Question: can a whole cab be done in (3) 4x8 sheets?

Or does it take 4?

So I got this today for Zelda.  I have no idea what to do with it, but I got it. Haha. ;)

It's pretty cool. The original owner from 2002, he had all the original packaging.  A lot of the equipment was unused like the keyboard and mouse.

Decade the monitor? Or no? I'm not gonna lie....I'm a bit intimidated by that idea.

If you've worked on a regular monitor, you can decase that without an issue. You're going to need to build a frame for the chassis, because they're not conveniently put together like arcade monitors, but if you can build a cabinet, you can certainly do that.

So this is happening again. :). I know, I know....I change my mind a lot.   I'm an Artiist, which means I'm weird.  Haha.  Thing is, I want this thing to be my vision.  I feel like I've already set my mind to the Playchoice 10 route and if I don't do it....I'm cheating myself.  I picked up another PC 10 board, a NES game link, a PowerPak (since the Everdrive doesn't seem to sync well) and also a mikes PC 10 to jamma adapter.  I have a switching power supply, harness, etc...on the way now.  this should be fun to figure out! :)

I also picked up the last of the stock of 5/8 inch t molding from t-molding.com.  This is new stuff, only avaliable in 3/4 before....so I had to wait months for them to restock.  This t molding when I saw it was released, was the reason I built a new thinner cabinet.  To try and make it a bit more authentic.

And finally, an update from the art front.....I drew out some filagree I want to incorporate into the bezel art.  This pattern will eventually be gold chrome foil.  I think I posted the reference picuture earlier in this thread that is serving as my inspiration for the artwork.

So I plan to get some work done in the next couple weeks. Stay tuned.

That's funny that you mention that Chance.  It was the first thing I thought of when I saw they announced the new NES. Lol.  I'll be picking one up for sure.  I also just discovered the Raspberry Pie and Retro Pie the other day (yeah, I'm late to the party, haha).  I ordered one just because I want to play around with it.

As far as a cab update goes, Ive been priming and sanding away.  Not really posting pics or updates because it's really boring.Haha.

Awesome build :)

Why will you need 2p start button for 1 player cab?
Personally though I would make it 2 player as most of the fun of owning a cab is kicking ure mates arse!

As for buttons it depends what you want the cab to do.

But I have 4 admin buttons on mine which are previous menu, quit game, genre and favorites.
The first 2 are must haves imo for easy navigation the 2nd 2 depends if you would like to use those features i guess.

Of course if you use a Ipac you can have shift keys and just use normal play buttons but you have to mark em up or remember which is which!!

alternating 2 player games like package man would be my guess.

Lots of single player games have a two player mode, maybe hard-coded to a button too. Haven't tested it though.
Doing arcades, the cheap@ss way!
