Cruisin USA - Pedal 1 (gas) not working.

So I got my wheel setup right based on guidance here in the forums (changed mame ini deadzone to .04) which feels great but now my gas no longer works.  Brake (pedal 2) is fine.  controls in mame say Y axis for both pedal 1 and 2 and pedal 1 responds when I press the gas in the mame controller config.  Weird is that the gas worked fine before I fixed the wheel deadzone).  I even tried to push the gas in and then release when assigning mame but still not luck.  Right now my pedal 2 (brake) is able to select the map in the game (as if it's 1) which is weird so I tried reversing them in the analog but still no luck.  I will continue working on this but thought after I spent an hour, I would ask the experts.

UPDATE - Fixed it.  Here is the solution (Logitech GT wheel).

Go to calibrate controls and when it asks for gas, press it, then release, then hit enter (or accept).  Then swap the pedals in the analog menu and it works.  weird but it works.  Confirmed to work with cruising World.  I can't believe that playing this game with a wheel at home feels this good.  wow.
