Control issues
« on: April 07, 2015, 03:25:41 pm »
I'm having some control issues  :banghead:

I have installed a ServoStic, 2 action buttons, 2 player start buttons & 2 Coin. They are connected to the PC with a Kade encoder. For the most part everything seems to be working fine except while playing "vs Super Mario Bros" I get what feels like key blocking which (afaik) shouldn't happen with the Kade.

I will try an explain whats going on.. I am moving (right), holding (fast/fire) and when I go (left) then (right) again mario sometimes becomes stuck until I let go and start over.

When I force the ServoStic into 4-way mode it plays fine.. Everything I find online states it was a 8-way but I don't remember the game playing like this with my old iPac/Happ 8-way panel. I cant figure out if its the stick, the kade or the idiot mashing the buttons  :dizzy:

I don't have an IPAC or ade, but I would be a little surprised if the I-PAC didn't have the same issue. As soon as you hit a diagonal, the character will stop moving and is common for some 4-way games. When you switch to 4-way, it eliminates the problem by simply making it impossible to hit a diagonal direction. It is essentially a problem with the game because it wasn't coded to handle diagonal inputs.

So I can't really help you, I can only confirm that what you are experiencing is normal behavior. I doubt that it is a problem with your encoder.

I just tried the game out on a keyboard. If you are holding down, Mario will not walk at all.

it sounds like the square restrictor is giving you the issue. I'm sure its not a problem with the kade.

so many modern sticks have square gates and of course sticks like the servo stick rely on them in order to switch between 4 and 8 way. Problem is, IMO the square gate sucks for 8 way and makes it very easy to slip into the diagonal.

I'd bet that if you tried your exact setup but change the stick to a simple cheap happ super, you'd have no problem.

Thanks guys, I was going nuts trying to pinpoint the issue, I think MGB got it..

I played for 10min in 8-way and it does seem like I'm doing what MGB & Darth said. Not LEFT and DOWN (I would notice mario crouching) but LEFT and UP you cant see.

Does anyone see a problem with running it in 4-way?

If not, I think I will solve the problem by editing the controls.ini to use 4-way instead of 8-way for this game.. I know whats happening now and can compensate, where as visitors wont..

I would think super Mario would be fine with 4 way
