Sega Naomi Game Just Resets
« on: April 01, 2015, 09:27:40 am »
Hi. I have a Sega Naomi game that just resets just after the warning screen. I have tried the same game in the Naomi console and others without a problem. All the tests show good.

The only visual difference between the two games I can see with my untrained eye are:
- The transistor has more rust on it.

- some of the holes near the transistor are filled with solder while on the the other not as much. I'll have to add a picture to show this.

Any suggestions?

So, the game works in a consolized Naomi, but not in your cab? Check your voltages.

check your cooling fans, a loss of the PWM signal (tach) from the CPU fan will cause the system to "go dead" as it shuts down to prevent overheating.

Sorry for my bad explanation. I'm calling the Naomi unit the console. The problem is with the cartridge not the Naomi system.

Therefore I don't believe its the voltages as other solid state ROMs work without a problem.

How do you measure the voltages? I think I seen a video on YouTube on how to do this as I was researching this problem.

You'll need a multimeter to test the voltages. They're pretty cheap to buy, if you don't have one. As you say, there are videos on YouTube showing how to use one to test voltages, among other things.

Here is part 2 of what the game is doing. Part 1 just shows a different cartridge with the same game title on the same hardware working.

Maybe the cart isn't seating properly. Try pressing down on the cart gently, but firmly, with even pressure. Also, try cleaning the connector pins on the cart, and on the Naomi unit (for good measure).

^this

I use an inline voltage meter and to keep an eye on the 3.3v/5v.

I had A similar issue what a crazy taxi sit down machine where the Naomi board would boot but the cart wouldn't.
The cart May have a bad chip or corrosion due to liquid.
You can check out irepairsega.com for getting it repaired.
Typically cost $75-&100.

Ken is very helpful
I believe he used to work for Sega.

If you need a repair in the UK/Europe I can highly recommend Andy at [AGS] or Craig at [Giz 10p].

Thanks for sending the info through. The issue is I already own the game, and I think I can buy the same game again for less than the repair.

The only thing that looks easy enough for me to replace is the transistor which has rust on it. People on this thread talk about the voltage so perhaps its worth a try.

Can you measure the voltage of the game board?

I'll check the Aussie forums for someone local. The Aussie dollar is low at the moment.

Any voltage to the cart will be fed from the main PSU through the naomi motherboard

Its always a great idea to make sure your voltages are correct anyway (and its the easiest first step for most repairs) but it may not be the issue here.

I finally had some time to check the voltages coming out of the CAPCOM I/O board.

Yellow=12.05v
Red=5.21v
Brown(Orange)=3.329v

And for good measure another power test with the same result.
