Repairman replaced my flyback, but why did he do this?

I have a strange wave in my screen and I think this may be the reason. Can anyone shed some light on the possible reasons for doing this? Should I undo it to fix the wave in the screen?

What do you mean?

The flyback is a DNF-FL2701
and the chassis is a CGM2500

That would probably help.

    Apparently he made a homemade ferrite coil (The wires wrapped around that magnet), That very well could be your problem.

it was used to boost heater current/voltage
was called a :booster: in it's day
means the fly-back is wrong ? / not providing proper voltage/current
or the tube is gunning down
in short it is a way to boost the tube

out come is not good for the tube

Do  you guys think it would harm anything to undo it, fix the traces, and fire it up? What should the voltage be normally?

That mod was done because your tube has a short in it that could not be removed with a rejuvenator. This mod isolates the tube filaments from ground. This is a common way to save a bad tube.

I've done this many times.

   **I bet my Beltron could blow some chunks out of that tube**  Ken that's an interesting take,( never tried that) wouldn't that require a swamp to stabilize the circuit?  But to me Id still be thinking, Magnetic interference, or the underpowered fly back given the problem manifests itself in waves.... OP: Finding out if that's the right coil for that tube would be a good place to start.

I read about people supposedly doing that right before they dragged a game with a dim tube to Super Auctions 15 years ago but I didn't think anyone actually bothered. 

Isolating the filaments from ground is a new one on me, but I'll defer to Ken's experience.

    I would imagine a brightener is the same come concept.
