X-Box or PS2
« on: December 25, 2003, 01:42:42 am »
My son has the chance to get either an X-Box or a PS2 for Christmas. Which would you guys choose and why. I personally want him to pick the X-Box but only because I have played it and I like the feel of the controller-'s'. Are there some games for one system that aren't available for the other that are REALLY good? Thanks for the input.

PS2
PROS:
PS2 has a wider library
Since Sony made second generation console backward compatible w/ (soft/hard)ware, the 3rd generation hardware is likely to support the 2nd & 1st generation (soft/hard)ware (in my mind at least.)

Cons:
Um...
Expect for what might call "shovelware" can't think of many.

XBOX:
PROS:
Some good exclusives.  I want an Xbox so can play Spawn in Soul calibur (but this is about you not me)
Hack-ability; you can make it a nice little media center from what I have read.

Cons:
Kinda worried that XBOX2 won't support XBOX1 games.  Sounds corny, but I won't buy into XBOX until I know that the XBOX2 will play XBOX1 games, and then, I will most likely buy a XBOX1 (I just bought a N64 last month, but again this is about you not me)

All in all, I think you will be happy either.  Both can play dvds.  If they didn't that would have been a point for me, but I bought the PS2, actually it was a gift 2 years ago for christmas which if I remember was before XBOX came out, but I could be wrong.  Both have a good selection of recent games(PS2 just has more.)

Don't worry about the controller though, I bet you can find an after-market controller that you like for PS2.

Honestly,

1. If you are going to buy a ps2 or xbox wait a month the prices are going to drop after the Christmas rush.

2. Sony just released ps2.5 with cd/dvd burner and hardrive. Which means we can probably expect it here soon. also adding to a price drop

Finally what games does your son like. That's what will it really comes down to.  All the bells and whistles are great, but if you don't like the games...

If you already have ps1 remember the ps2 can play your old ps1 games as well as the ps2. If you go with an xbox you will get better graphics more online games and really great dvd player compared to the sony.

He'll like either one.

Merry Christmas

Thanks everyone. I let him read this and he is going to get the PS2. He likes the games and his friends have PS2's also so he can trade games. He also is more used to the PS2 controllers. Oh well. I played Tiger Woods Golf today on PS2 and I think I will be getting that for me :) Thanks again for your input.

I got a PS2 just about exactly a year ago and have enjoyed the heck out of every minute of it. Far and away the best gaming system I've ever owned.
