Zippy Joystick Installation

Building my first control panel and have a quick question. I have two zippy 8-way capable round top joysticks that I installed and I seemed to have installed it in the wrong orientation. For example when I pushed the joystick "Up" it registered "Right". No big deal I swapped around some wires and got all directions registering correctly. As I got things sorted out I decided to do some testing with Mortal Kombat 2. All things were working correctly except hitting the up diagonals was a pain. My question is if the joystick were oriented correctly would this improve hitting the up diagonals or would it still function the same?

If changing the orientation in the panel will do nothing how can I improve diagonal accuracy? Or do I just need better joysticks?

As far as I know they can be oriented any direction, no differences, and what registers is just dependent on how you wire.

I have not messed with mine, but you can adjust the arm on the switches to get them to register earlier or later, hopefully someone with more experience in that will chime in.

The quote below was for  someone trying to avoid diagonals with a 4-way restrictor, but the same advice applies in reverse (bend up instead of down) to hit diagonals easier.

By slightly bending the lever arm, you change the distance that you have to move the joystick handle to make the actuator press the lever arm into the nub on the microswitch.

By bending the green zone down by just a bit on all the switches, you can tune the stick so that the diagonals are just out of reach.



Green zone = OK to bend
Red zone = Avoid bending

BorgDog is 100% correct.  Orientation of the base is not important, so long as 2 switches are perpendicular to the screen, and two are parallel.  It's all in how it's wired after that.

There is sometimes a bit of variation in the stock switches of the Zippyy sticks, but it can easily be corrected by tweaking the metal blade of the switches.  You might also want to try it without the restrictor plate.  8-way operation may be better without it.

  as already said by the others, there is no proper orientation really but double check your restrictor to make sure its set right.
make sure its not set for 4-way when you plan to play fighters.

either your restrictor plate needs adjusting or perhaps you havnt set the diagonals in mame to suit the zippy ie....tab, input general and set controls
