High Score Competition #161: Depthcharge
« on: March 09, 2015, 09:13:10 pm »
High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard

--------------------------------
Game Name : Depthcharge
ROM Name  =     depthch
--------------------------------

Settings:
   default : coinage 1 coin/1 credit

Controls:
4 buttons:   move left/right and throw depth charge left/right

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depthcharge

KLOV: http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7558

Game play from KLOV:

Player uses buttons to move a ship left and right at the top of the screen. Additional buttons fire depth charges left and right. A total of 6 depth charges can be fired and on screen at the same time. Once a depth charge has exploded or reached the bottom, another may be launched.

You have 90 seconds to destroy as many submarines as possible. Each submarine will have a number from 10-90 indicating how many points it is worth if destroyed. Submarines will randomly release mines that will float up to destroy your ship, which you must avoid. Every mine that hits your ship will reduce your score by half. Only four submarines will appear on the screen at a time.

Each submarine you destroy will be indicated in miniature at the bottom in a "graveyard". Every ship in the graveyard will score a 30-pt bonus at the end of the game.

A score of 500 or more at the end of the game will result in a 45-second extended play.

Last day: Sunday, Mar. 22 2015 midnight Pacific

I have been wanting to pick this for a while.   Nice relaxing game, no need to smash CP.   The most a game will last is 2 minutes, so play early and play often!    My only fear picking this game is a tie score.   In case of a tie, contestants will battle to death with Captain Kirk fight music in the background.   ;D

And I thought I had done pretty well at 2105  :dunno have a feeling this is going to be a close scoring competition as the timer keeps scores pretty low.

So, you pretty much pound the depthcharge buttons & avoid getting shot? I can do that.

Oh, don't let your 2-year-old push the credit button during a game. Instant new game start.  :o

If only the timer ran a bit slower I might have caught Popsicle - the charges were all sent but the timer ran out !!   At least I did pass jasonbar - 2920

Just busted 2500 for the first time.  I gotta stop myself from spamming and basically double-shotting and wasting my charges!  I don't get it, the first time I played this, I was like "this game is terrible" and an hour later... I can't stop!

I tried aiming this time.

3,160.

One shy of filling up 3 rows.

Wow, not only does getting blown up use up some of your precious time, but the game docks you so very many points!

Yep - Takes half of your points which really hurts later in the game !!

What I hate is how long it takes to hit the first ship and it doesn't put another ship on screen until you hit that one !!

That damned 3k mark remains elusive, but I think I got a few tricks up my sleeve.  But man, the RNG (or at least what appears to be RNG gods) smoked me last time.  Had a little bastard of a 20 pointer flying along that fired up at me what looked like 7 times.  He's spamming worse than I was!  Why is this game so fun?

I finally managed to pass the 3K mark but it's tough getting any higher - seems my system loves putting the ships all the way toward the bottom of the screen and then one on top that gets hit by 3 shots taking out the ones that were suppose to continue down.

Finally above 3K with 3090 !

Played a few this morning with some black, black coffee.  I don't think I let any get by - 4 rows of ships for the bonus.

I think my strategy worked, which was to blanket both sides of the screen intermittently, saving only one shot for the top moving ships that need quick aim and release.  The quicker you hit ships, the faster more come out in the time allotted, so the blanket walls of charges hit them as they appear.

went with a fairly obscure game that many have probably never seen - Saboten Bombers by NMK (released by Tecmo) - Hope you guys like it.
