Smoked Plexi = Ridiculous!!
« on: December 23, 2003, 04:03:47 pm »
The home depot and Lowes around here do not carry this stuff.  So, I called a local glass company.
For a 24" x 36" sheet of 1/4 Grey Transparent Plexi........
..........$63.93!!!!!!!! U.S., yea, that's not Canadian or Peso's or anything.
OMG!!  That is just nuts to me.  Does anyone have any other place to get this stuff around Memphis, Tn?  Heck, even any place to order it online?

Is black plexi the same as smoked plexi?   It does not look like it.

The answer to that would be a resounding "no".  If you buy either of these, you'll lose every game.   :D

Both of the descriptions on those auctions say "nontranslucent".  That means you can't see through it.

*edit: Beat me to it :) *
Non-translucent might make it a bit hard to play :)
I don't know about elsewhere, but smoked tempered 1/4" glass is significantly cheaper than smoked 1/4" plexi here.

Tim,

For some reason, glass places charge more for plastic than plastic places do (at least that's been my experience).  They don't seem to be set up to handle it because the processing methods are quite different.

Try a plastics place.  A 24x36 shouldn't cost much more than $35 cut to size.  And if they have a choice between light and dark, my opinion is to go with the dark.  It looks too dark until you get it in front of a monitor, and then.....coolness :).

the best source of plex i've found is local plastic suppliers. check you local yellow pages under platic wholesalers, dealers, or something similar. you should be able to get a bezel sized piece for around $20-$25.
also they might have different tints. in my opinion the darker the better as long as it's translucent. this improves contrast on the screen(just crank the brightness up on your monitor to compensate).  it also makes for a nice clean bezel that hides anything behind it.

Get smoked tempered glass.  Plexi scratches way to easy.    The cab. I bought came with smoked glass.  I wasn't going to use it, but installed it for yuks, it looks great.

If you needed a sheet of plastic but didnt need to see thru it, like for a liner or something

I had a hard time finding tinted plexi, tried the local Home Depots and menards and lowes, they didnt even have it. Was out of town on a job and needed some parts so I went to the home depot, found a 24x24" 1/4thickness, bronze tinted for like 6 bucks, when clear was $4 i think. but SIXTY bucks? wow

That's one approach... but I'd only do that if you were already decent / familiar with auto tint application... otherwise you'll end up with an annoying bubble in your field of play/view... *Shrug* just my opinion... I've done a bad tint job in my day... and I tried again on my cabinet with the static kling easy tint on glass for my cab... STILL couldn't get it without bubbles.

So yeah... ymmv with that

Don't use the static cling stuff, use the stuff that you have to wet down and on a flat surface it should be simple to get it perfect as long as you take the glass out of your cabinet to apply it. :)
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

I was really trying to say don't do either... I was just trying to belabor the point by pointing out even the brain dead simple one I still dorked up. =)

I contend unless you are good with the stuff, I wouldn't waste the ducats... =)
