Point out the location of the security chip on Psikyo board?
« on: February 25, 2015, 12:25:04 pm »

Diving into PCB repair, because what the heck.  I want to check the Security chip for cold solder, or maybe a missing crystal but it would be really helpful if I knew which chip was the security chip.  Can anyone point to it on this pic?

Board is Strikers 1945

while i don;t know specifically, lots of "security chips" are just atmel microcontrollers or small I2C PROMS.

i'd look at the smaller socketed chip to the right of the "4" IC on the left of the board

1st troubleshooting step is check your 5v... 2nd, pry out the socketed IC chips and reinsert them. they often get corroded connections.

Thanks

I'll investigate that chip tonight.  Are there any good videos that show how to test voltage on boards?  I mean I see contact points labeled ground on the PCB but idiots like me sometimes need to be shown where to put the leads.

A very good place to check for 5 volts is right at the power pins of an ic itself.
Those pins on most chips are the lower left and upper right if the notch is up.
I probably made that sound more confusing but if you look up the data sheet on a particular ic, you'd see the gnd and vcc chip. Not every chip follows this but most do.

Many boards also have test points and they may be marked
