Need sever help with Makvision 29" trimode crt..
« on: February 16, 2015, 06:00:27 pm »
Hey guys...this is my first actual post as I've spent the last month or so trying to get my feel for this first hyperspin cabinet build before asking any questions. So far the hyperspin part hasn't been too bad, but where the problems start is trying to incorporate the ole Makvision 29" trimode crt that I recently got from xarcade. I am running an i7 pc with 8g ram and windows 7 64bit os and have tried two different video cards with no sucess thus far. First I tried the arcadevga 5000 card b/c I am using ultimarc for all of the button/trackball/ i/0 board and such, so it just seemed like an easy fix...wrong. With this card I cannot for the life of me get a 640x480 res to the monitor. I have forced windows to boot in low res along with using the software with the arcadvga card to try and send this res to the monitor, but when I finally get it to accept it there is horrible vertical shutter like it does not like it. If I boot the computer up after restarting it with all of the settings to 640x480 it always changes the setting to 640x288...which looks bad and all of my games display in a vertical format but skinnier? So, I ventured out today to just try another video card to see and I picked up a basic gt 610 card and upon setting it up the first time it acted like it was going to work perfect...all looked very nice until I backed out of the SFII game I was testing it in and then it flipped back to my lcd monitor into higher res and I have not been able to get it to accept any signal since. Whenever I try the monitor flickers on and off with the picture all in the middle of the screen. I am at a loss as of now so any help would be greatly appreciated for this newbie! If it is easier to call to explain if you have dealt with this my number is 318-840-4479.. Thanks again, Aaron

oh...this monitor is suppose to accept a max res of 640x480, not the svga model that only take the 800x600, but I read somewhere that mine will not accept interlaced resolutions, which I think 640x480 is isn't it?

Not sure if it is the exact same or not, but I have a Makvision 3129db1. It was already in a GT cab I picked up at auction. I am running it with a Radeon 4870 along with the CRT Emudriver. I also flashed the bios on the video card with the atom setup that Calamity put together.

My steps were something like this ( I may miss a detail here and there).

Install Win 7 on pc. Old C2D E8400 build.
Install CRT emu driiver for Win 7.
Could not get picture on 3129 monitor due to out or range signals during boot up.
Booted up with dell LCD attached via DVI.
Once booted ran Arcade OSD to set res to 640x480 (non interlaced)
Switched video card over to dvi-->vga --> 3129 monitor.
Got a picture
Adjusted monitor to working picture, sync, etc.

Then I flashed the bios on the 4870. This prevents the video card from outputting high resolutions that could cause issues with your monitor. I do hear a couple of slight clicks when the monitor is trying to sync, but nothing like before when the Win 7 boot animation would kick in at 1024x768.

Now I still have a few things to work through. Windows is defaulting to some 7xx x 5xx resolution rather than just 640x480. the picture looks fine though.

Highly suggest you pop over to the groovymame section of this board and start reading. There is a ton of info. It covers all the driver and bios stuff too.

Thanks for the info....sounds like your monitor has the auto sync feature that mine doesn't...man this can be frustrating.  If the monitor starts clicking and screen flashing quickly is that b/c of a too high of a res being sent to it?  I'm trying to set things up on the gt 610 card on my lcd screen then put it over to the makvision, but I have to have them both hooked up together for my it to recognize them both and when I unhook the lcd the mak goes crazy everytime accept for the first time when I thought i had it...any ideas on this?

I think the problem is that you are trying to solve the same problem with two different solutions at the same time. Pull the arcadevga card for now and force windows into 640x480 and see if you can't adjust the monitor to properly sync with that.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

The clicking is the monitor trying and failing to sync. It is from a res that the monitor is not built to support. I have not seen it personally, but I read that it can cause failures in the horizontal sync section of your chassis if allowed to go on for too long. So I took steps to prevent that from happening.

Yes it can be frustrating, but just take some time to read about what others have done here with pc's to arcade monitors. Don't bother searching for just makvision or anything. Just read in the groovy section. Many of the principles will apply to any monitor. You may want to think about getting one of the suggested AMD cards (not arcade VGA though) so you can run the outstanding crt emudriver.
