  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Hey all - I have been scouring this forum - and am getting confused when we talk about impedance, ohms, watts, amps - I'm not a dummy - but I apparently need some more knowledge - looking to you for some help...
I am planning my arcade cabinet - and have most of it ready to go - but have some questions about the audio.  I really want to be able to use my cab as a MAME machine, as well as a jukebox for my man-cave.
I was gifted a car amp: BMWx-43: 300 watts, RMS: 4 channel x 45 watts, 4 ohm.  link here:  http://www.amazon.com/Nitro-Bmw-x43-Watt-Channel-Amplifier/dp/B0030D69M2
As well as 2 car speakers: Alpine SPS-410: 45 watts RMS, 140 watts Peak,   link here: http://www.amazon.com/Alpine-Type-S-SPS-410-Coaxial-Speakers/dp/B004TU5R1E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1423795297&sr=1-1&keywords=alpine+sps-410

I am planning on using these in my arcade cab/jukebox.  So I have some questions that I hope more talented people than I can answer:
1) power: I have read that you can modify a PCS to power the amp.  the speakers connect normally to the amp - and the amp is powered by the PCS.  I have read some articles that you CAN do this, but you have to watch out for amps  - and then how do you connect the PC to the amp?    Is this the best solution.
2) Also, I have read that the "safest" solution is to use an AC/DC converter (as this will be plugged into an 120vac smart power strip).  However, with these units, what converter would I need - they range from 40 bucks to like 300!  Given the speakers and amp above, what would be your recommendation of the most appropriate converter?
3) Which makes more sense - PSU or power converter?  I'm hoping for something that will simply plug into the power strip.  Let me know your thoughts.
4) I was hoping to add the 2 speakers to channel 1&2 to the amp - and I wanted to get a subwoofer (something smaller and akin to my setup) to hook to channel 3.  What would be your recommendations for a simple sub -  not trying to blow my mind -but want to hear the bass when I use the cab as a jukebox.  6", 8" 10"?  brand?   any recommendations are appreciated.
5) can you give me a quick rundown of how all of these things.. based on your recommendations... would be connected?

As always, in any forum that I post in, I am very grateful for your knowledge and opinions and respect your experience.  I am just trying to figure this piece out and appreciate your responses.  Thanks and let me know if you need any additional details.

J.

I spent some time trying to figure how best to describe the problems you're going to run into....   then I found this post in a forum from several years ago......

http://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/car-audio/604.html

Basically a cars electrical system has several hundred amps of power available at any given time (thanks to its battery)  which you will not be able to provide without substantial investment into a car battery charger or other device to provide the necessary amps.  That said, its possible to make it "work" with a PC power supply but don't expect any real sound quality.  You are better off keeping this amp for your car and just getting a plate amp from Amazon to power your system.

To answer your questions directly though:
1) PC power supply...  highest wattage you can find.    Honestly a car starter/charger would provide the most usable power.
1.5) head phone (3.5mm) plug to RCA    tons of these on amazon
2)  see number 1
3) see number 1
4) how big a room do you have?  How much space in the cabinet?  Sealed or ported?    Honestly just grab some cheap 10" 4 ohm subs from mcm electronics, decent sound, pretty cheap

Honestly, this isn't a safe or efficient solution.  Just go to partsexpress.com and look for plate amplifier for your subs and audio amplifier for your mids/highs.   These are plug and play solutions, they'll turn themselves on/off if they are getting audio signal.

Sorry man wish I had better news for you.
