Mix 12V and 5V with pacled64
« on: February 11, 2015, 11:56:15 am »
Hi all,

First I'm sorry for my poor English (French Inside  :dunno), but I search a reply to my question and the only forum which I find is here

Well, I realise my first arcade cabinet and I would like a control panel with a control of led for sticks and buttons.
So I have bought pacled64 from arcadewolrd (better place I think for my country) with 1 pacled64, 2 illuminated joysticks 12V power, 16 ultralux RGB illuminated arcade buttons, and some chrome effect illuminated buttons 12V power.
I would like to power the pacled64 by 12V and connect all leds from buttons and joysticks to it. I had not data sheet, and now, I see a big problem : RGB illuminated arcade buttons have 5V power!

So, I would like to know if it's possible to mix 12 V and 5V powers (I know it's possible to use two pacled boards but it's very expensive with the price of the card and the shipping). I do not have much knowledge in electricity and electronics, so i take an idea from pacdrive web site in the part called 'Advanced Connection Methods'  : http://www.ultimarc.com/pacdrive.html

So Is is possible to realise connections like in the attachment or is it crazy  ??? (Grounds from 12V and 5V power supplies are connected)

Yes, that's possible! As long as +5V and +12V has common ground it should work fine.

THANK'S A LOT !!!!! :applaud:

I'm very happy from your reply   ;D  I was already imagining not control 12V powered leds... :banghead:

Just a last point. If I put 5V to powered the pacled64, an external power for 12V leds with a common ground, it shoud work fine too ?
(inversion of 5 and 12 V in the picture)

Ok... wait a minute. The PacLED requires +5V. Right? That means you can not power the PacLED from a 12V power source. So the ineversion of the picture is the correct one. (Assuming the PacLED requires 5V).

Yes, do NOT connect 12V directly into the PacLED!

Tested today !

I use 12V external power and 5V internal power delivered by pacled64. It works perfectly!

Okay don't put 12V to the PAC LED. Use a relay board for anything over 5v or you will burn the Pac LED up
