Please help identify these spinners
« on: December 21, 2003, 09:45:26 pm »
Today I acquired these CAPCOM controllers/spinners from a good mate of mine who was doing a little Christmas Cleaning to make room for the holidays. Not wanting to look stoopid , I took them with a smile and said thanks... still not even knowing what the hell they were.

Could someone tell me what game these were used on?
It appears to have a plunger on it as well, perhaps maybe a button of sort...definitely a spinner for sure.

Off the top of my head I can't even recall a CAPCOM game that used a spinner.     ... Shows how much I know though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

GZ

They look like Forgotten Worlds spinners to me.  The green spur gear makes the encoder wheel spin at an x:1 ratio to the knob similar to Arkanoid, correct?

That sure looks like it judging by the pic. As for the Arkanoid, I haven't a clue. I've never even played that game to tell you the truth.  :D

The Arkanoid spinner was designed such that one turn of the spinner knob resulted in 20 turns of the encoder wheel through the use of spur gears, similar to what is shown in your photo.  Since Arkanoid used a 24 tooth encoder wheel, this was the equivalent of 480 teeth passing between the optics per 1 revolution of the knob.

Now I see !  ;)

Can they be rigged to operate with MAME and function under a PC? Pretty much what I'm asking is, are they suited more an arcade owner replacing parts, or can the home-gamer use these also?

Thanks,

GZ

Almost EVERY arcade control (including those) can be interfaced with the PC. But you might want to consider seeing if anyone needs those for an actual Forgotten Worlds machine first, since that is a very rare game, and I doubt those parts are readily available.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
