Handheld spinner idea
« on: December 21, 2003, 12:16:30 pm »
I was just looking at an old spinner I found and had an idea for a handheld spinner.  It would probably be cylindrical, 2-3" in diameter with the dial at the top, buttons on the grip, and made of sturdy plastic.  Overall it would be about the size of a PS2 controller and have a USB interface.

Has anyone or any company made anything like this?  Would anyone be interested in buying one for say $25-40 if I could make one?

THe first thing I think of is the old TV pong game I had back in the 70s. THe controllers were cylinders,  about as tall as  a soda can, diameter about 1.5-2". The top inch or so of the cylinder was what spun around and moved your paddle

Now that I think about it, something like that would be cool as a removable spinner control. You would simply cut a hole in your CPthe same size as the controller. SLide it in like a round peg in a round hole until the spinny part is the only thing above the CP. You would need some kind of clamp underneath to keep it the same height and lock the base so it didnt spin

I wish I still had that pong game.. It served me well :)

im sure you could easily make a handheld spinner.  you could either hand carve some wood to make it... or hack a simular handheld shaped object...

the old epix joysticks would work well for such a thing

That sounds wicked cool, I'd probably buy one especialy if it were closer to the $25 range :Pyep, i'm cheap
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Yes I would most likely be interested.   I was considering have two additional "handheld" spinners to go along with my two permanent spinners so when I have friends over we can play 4-player Warlords....  Of course if you make them and they work well, then post some pics and reviews and let me know.

I would not want them to be mounted on my control panel, but rather have them be able to be placed inside the control panel (ie: lift the top and place them inside) when not in use.
