Golden Tee Complete build for newbie - lotso questions!
« on: January 21, 2015, 03:24:41 pm »
So here goes, my first attempt at real arcade hardware.  Have a MAME cab with lots of emulators but tired of waiting for Golden Tee Fore! to make its way to MAME.  I think I have purchased all the necessary parts but I'm still waiting on them to arrive.  I have searched all over the net but haven't found anything definitive as to how all of the Golden Tee Fore hardware connects.

Here is what I have purchased so far:

GT Complete green board and hard drive
Power supply for the green board....Do I need to buy a bypass cable for this?  Can it come from a regular computer store/Radio Crack?
JAMMA harness
3" trackball
Trackball interface harness for GT PCB
arcade buttons
EGA to VGA converter board

One other question I have:

Where does the sound come from?

This all seems very confusing and maybe it will all make sense when I get the parts. I just know I'm excited and would like to have a game plan for when everything arrives.  GT Gurus - Please help

ok so far so good..
but u have me confused here

>Trackball interface harness for GT PCB
arcade buttons
EGA to VGA converter board <

why did u buy these ?
when the green board already has everything u need

ie trackball input
ie control's in
the controls in are part of the jamma harness,as is the speaker,as is the power input's
the green board even use's a separate video card "on-board" that's output is vga
u can hook it right into a lcd,by removing the plug from the vga out of the video card to the vga input on the board, all the board dose is sep r/g/b/sync to be used by the jamma harness
when I test the green or red board I often do it right from the video card vga out

:banghead:  Thank you for the reply Ed

WOW!  I wish I had asked these questions before I got click happy ordering parts.  I read where I needed to convert the harness on a trackball to the harness that matches up on the GT PCB, make it simple to plug in.  That was the thought on that trackball harness.

The EGA to VGA converter I thought was a definite after everything I had read.  If I can plug VGA out of card directly into VGA on a monitor, that's what I'm doing!

The arcade buttons are just for the turn, fly-by, backspin, etc....  I cannot seem to find a CP for sale, right now I'm planning on building it so I needed a few buttons.

So do I need the power bypass cable for the green board?

no
>So do I need the power bypass cable for the green board?<..
the green board brings the +5/+12/gnd to the board through the jamma harness.
u will require +5/+12/gnd for the hard drive,as a rule we use a jumper made from a old atx supply to get the  hard drive plug, this would tie right into your power supply
+5/+12/gnd.
the jamma is a straight forward machine interface plug

Golden TEE Pinout

It's interesting that the Golden TEE folks claim the game is JAMMA, but it clearly is not.  The Golden Tee pinouts redefined many of the common pin meanings.  The JAMMA standard has provisions for a Trackball in place of the normal Joystick connections, but Golden Tee series boards use a separate trackball harness.

Thanks again. I did find a PDF version for GT Fore hardware and Ive been reading over that. Seems that sometimes the VGA output will work but it depends on the LCD/LED you use, varying results so i may still need the EGA converter.  I thought i read somewhere that the power bypass cable would help prevent the board from shorting out but I dont recall for sure.  If you say i dont need it then i wont order one.  Very excited about this and cant wait for my parts to arrive

Well that's encouraging to hear. I do have the converter already but it can still be returned.  There is so much conflicting information on this all over the web.  How does anyone know what to believe?  These GT Complete boards are getting harder to come by and more expensive by the day. I certainly dont want to fry mine. What is the purpose of the power bypass connections on the board?  There was a harness made to accomidate those connectors as well.  What does all of this mean!!?? :hissy:

In my experience, I found that I needed a genuine IT power supply to power up my green GT board. I could not get a computer PS to work. The real IT PS has a multitude of molex connectors for an IT cabinet and has enough juice to actually power the board.
I got an ancient CRT computer monitor to work with the VGA output at 800 x 600 I think.

Yes. No problem here as I've ordered a dedicated IT power supply for the green board.  I'm wondering about this harness I've read about.  It is difficult to see in the picture because it blends in with the background, probably by design.  This looks like some sort of standard PC cable though, I just don't know what it is or if it's necessary

thank-u but no no and no
what u want to do is get a atx power supply
and take the hard drive plug from it at the power supply end, from there
u will follow this rule red=+5 black=ground yellow is +12..
tie the cable's that exact way, u now have the nessary voltage's for a hard drive..
the other way around if to use a atx power supply, and feed the jamma the +5/+12/gnd it is looking for, and using the spare molex plug's to power the hard drive ,just rember take green to ground to make the atx power supply chirp to life
I will post u serveal way's in a byte
ie save your money, the green and red golden tee board's are some of the best roboust board's I have ever seen, and or fixed

Basically, the power bypass cable makes it so that you're getting power straight from the power supply and not through the Jamma harness. The Fore boards can sometimes draw more power than what it is available through a Jamma harness. I've heard that trying to power a Fore board through the harness can burn the Jamma connectors on the board. Here is the Fore manual from IT's website. It has a wiring diagram for you.

well out of the 39 odd golden tees I have and or sold
I have never seen power-supply damage at the jamma edge connecter
all were done the same way...

Yeah it sounds like this is a rare occurrence, but it can happen.  Like I said, these boards seem to be getting harder to come by and they're not getting cheaper.  Maybe I'll play the safe way and try this.  Basically, I believe I could make this connector for a few dollars instead of spending $20 on that harness.  Just the right molex connector to fit the GT board and then I would want to intercept the power going to the JAMMA harness and feed it into the power bypass.. Does that sound correct??

I think so. You can also buy one directly from Incredible Technologies. I think they're $9 from them.

I guess I'm getting the hang of this a little. I have GT PCB and hard drive and power supply.  No JAMMA harness or trackball yet but I figured this should show something if I hook it all up.....HOLY ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---!  It works!!  I plugged it directly in to a 27" 1080p computer monitor I have and it is alligned perfectly, colors look good (well as good as an EGA signal can on a 1080p monitor).  Without the JAMMA harness, I simply made up a little adapter to plug into the power bypass on the board coming from my power supply.  I got a little anxious with my part ordering, as mentioned above, and ordered the power bypass harness directly from Incredible Technologies.  It was only $9 but with tax and shipping it comes to like $26!  Dont buy this.. Way too easy to put together on your own, probably less than $3.00. So I have this video converter too (EGA to VGA) and it is still in the box.  So happy this is working directly from GT video card to my monitor via VGA cable.  Bring on the other parts.... I want to play this thing!

I have another question on this.  My trackball is ordered but did not receive it yet (Happ).  My JAMMA harness has the pinouts required for all controls of GT, except for the trackball.  I noticed a connection on my board that says trackball1. Will I need some other sort of harness to plug the trackball directly into this connection?

On another issue, I tried connecting this through the video converter board to an LCD tv.  It looked pretty good for about 5 min then seems like the brightness went way up and the colors were washed out.  Changed some clamp settings on the converter board and the same thing happened, looked good then brightness went way up.  I have read about this issue on the internet but not found a solution.  Does anyone know some settings that will keep this converter board stable?

You will need a Golden Tee trackball harness to PCB cable. Here is one that's on eBay, but there are others.

Thanks for all of the help on this.  I have everything up and running now.  The video converter works pretty well.  The major issue still is an occasional, slight jump of the screen due to sync issues.  Still playing with the "clamp" setting to see what I can come up with.  Once you have the hardware, it is pretty easy to put it together.  I didn't realize this until I had everything.  I ended up building my CP from scratch.  The Golden Tee Fore CP overlay was given to me by BadMouth.  I'm having a blast playing me some Golden Tee these days.  Have enough people interested in the area I think we're going to start a league.....really just another excuse to hang out and drink beer.
