Yes you're right, anytime you give up your information, you're exposing yourself to possible fraud.
Recently there was a scam around these parts where a gas station attendant was swiping cards ONCE and a phony receipt was created. Yes, you did get free gas as the transaction never went through, but your card was all set to be cloned. Be wary of even the "one-swipers".
The riskiest transaction that I can think of is in restaurants. You hand over your credit card, and it temporarily DISAPPEARS while being rung in. Who knows what could be happening to it.
But, that said.......sending out unencrypted credit card info is not the wisest of decisions.....
