"Thin" Joystick Recommendations Please
« on: December 24, 2014, 05:26:56 pm »
I need joystick assemblies for several projects where the joystick base has to be as thin as possible. (ie: like the Zippy). But the joystick must be long enough for the assembly to be used with a wood control panel.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Groovygamegear.com has a Zippy with a long shaft for wood panels if you don't mind the increased throw.  What are you putting the stick in? Can you recess mount?

Here is one stand-alone control panel project I need the joysticks assemblies for.

Check out the wiki, for ways to mount joysticks, in the event you ever decide to go with a shorter stick in a wooden panel.

I actually bottom mounted the short shaft zippyy from GGG in 5/8" wood CP, still sticks up enough for me and works great. ymmv

I may have to create a recess and also machine a long stick down to size on my mini-lathe to achieve middle ground.

Thanks.

After more thought, I decided to go with the "Under mount (support blocks)" idea, because I don't want to put mounting holes/bolts into the control panel top.

Does anyone know where I can get the necessary hardware for doing this? (I assume this will vary depending on the joystick you are using).

Thanks.

If you are placing an order with GGG or Ultimarc, they both carry the correct style threaded inserts for MDF.

You can make two support-bars (one for each support block) out of an aluminum or steel bar if you don't want to go with the fancy plates like EMDB did.   ;D

Thanks for the info on inserts.

I was thinking of using bars. I'd prefer what you call "fancy plates", but from what I can tell they would have to be custom made and I'm not set up for that.

Thanks.
