Cannonball (Outrun) not working on new Windows 7 install
« on: December 21, 2014, 04:48:18 pm »
Hey Everybody, I've posted a topic about this over on the Cannonball forum, but though I'd start one here in case anyone else has had a similar issue and can offer some advice.

The hard drive in one of my old PC's died requiring me to do a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new (old) one. I can now no longer get Cannonball to work on this PC. Initially I was getting an error message about the missing msvcp100.dll file, but I downloaded the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86). Now when I try and start the game it just loads up a blank white window with nothing happening. I'm using the same romset I've got on another PC with Cannonball that works fine on that PC. Cannonball had previously worked on this PC prior to the HDD dying. The GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT and I'm using windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I downloaded and updated all the Direct X stuff the day before.

The version of Cannonball I'm using is the Windows - OpenGL Rendering version. I initially just copied across the version I had been using on my other PC, but when that didn't work I tried a fresh download with no success.

Anyone have any ideas as to why it's just hanging on this blank screen when I try and start it? I'm not having any issues with the small amount of other games I'm running on it (Outrun C2C, Model 2 Emu and MAME).

I seem to recall that I had the same problem a while back when I initially tried to install Canonball. My problem was that the names on the files in the outrun rom was slightly different. On the Canonball page it says what they should be called. After renaming the files to the correct names it fixed the blank screen for me.

correct romfile names

Thanks for the suggestion and the link, but it's definitely not an issue with the ROM. I had a go with the Software Rendering version for Windows rather than the OpenGL one and initially that too was hanging, but I decided to re-update DirectX on this PC just to see if that would make a difference and now the Software Rendering version works, but the OpenGL version still hangs with a (Not Responding) message. Curious  ???

Although newer versions of DirectX are supposed to support all older versions, they do not include the older runtimes.

I do not know what the dependencies are for Cannonball, but a lot of emulators rely on these two:

Doesn't hurt to try at this point.  :dunno

Thanks for the suggestion dude, didn't work unfortunately.

I could probably get by with just the software mode, but it noticeably was dropping the frame-rate from time-to-time compared to the OpenGL version...   ::) in reality it's not really that big of a deal not being able to get this one game working (especially as I have another PC to play it on), but the mere fact I can't is bugging me.

The author of the re-write has responded to me over at the Cannonball forum so maybe he might be able to shed some light on the matter...

Edit: I've got this sorted out now, needed to update my GPU drivers.
