Need advice on custom PC parts list combatibility.
« on: December 05, 2014, 05:52:14 pm »
So one of my young-uns is building himself a custom PC and asked me for some advice on his parts list. I haven't built anything custom in about 5yrs so my knowledge on this stuff is way outdated. What do you all think of these pieces/parts:

Intel Extreme BOXDX79TO Mobo
Intel Core i7-4790K CPU
Corsair Vengeance PRO 32 GB DDR3 1600mhz (PC3 12800) ram
EVGA GeForce GTX760 SuperClocked w/EVGA ACX Cooler 2GB GDDR5 256 Vid Card

Not sure on the games he is wanting to run. He would just like some advice on his parts selection.

What do ya all think?

Everything is debatable, but I think that is a solid list of parts. :) However, I don't think that mother board and cpu have the same socket, so one would need to change.

Admittedly, I have a bit of a hard-on for the nVidia 900 series cards. Although they are a bit more expensive, if money allows, I'd push for a 900 series card. But, the 760 is a solid choice regardless.

Newegg.com has great deals on motherboard/processor combos, so you can be positive those are compatible. That's what I did at least. I got myself an i3/Foxconn combo.

Yeah, the CPU and mobo are definitely different sockets and not compatible.

My opinions:

That i7 is still overkill for gaming. No games currently out are actually optimized for that level of multi-threading (despite what you may read about Watch_Dogs or Wolfenstein.) Top end i5 will save you $70-$100.

Also, no games currently out utilize more than 8gb of ram, so more than 16gb is also probably overkill.

Spend that money saved on CPU and RAM on the new GTX 970, which has more GPU power, and is much more power efficient. With that, that system should certainly last at least 2-3 years @ 1080p.

i personally would steer away from the intel branded boards. I've played with quite a few different models and they feel more like an OEM board like what you'd find in a dell.

maybe look at a gigabyte or Asus brand board? ive had no complaints on either one of those.

steer clear of ECS brand boards for sure.

if you are gaming, put your $ into your videocard. thats where the game power is. not your CPU.

If you really want to go balls-to-the-wall here, why not go for 16 Gb of DDR4 memory instead of 32GB of DDR3? The price difference should be nominal.

because "balls to the walls" results in having to buy a ridiculously over priced CPU at this point in time to get DDR4 functionality. (at least until AMD makes a processor with the ddr4 memory controller and starts releasing processors)

Those parts look great. I might run it thru something like pcpartpicker just to be sure of compatibility. and best prices.
Does this unit have a soul?

Meant to say this earlier guys but thanks for all the advice so far. It has helped tremendously. I have been forwarding this onto him. Hopefully I will be able to show you his final decision in the near future...
