2P Issue?
« on: December 03, 2014, 10:37:42 pm »
For some reason when I'm playing a fighting game, with the 1P it's no problem pulling off basic moves like down, forward, punch. But with the 2P it's very difficult, works about 30% of the time. Does anyone know why this would happen and have any suggestions? I am using the GP-Wiz40 if that helps.

Thanks.

What joysticks are you using?  I know that can make a huge difference, especially if they have restrictor plates on them.

Also, just to ask, do you have the same issue with P1 when you are facing left?  or with P2 when you are facing right?

Got this joystick: http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=400

And P1 is fine either side, it's just P2. Same joystick purchased for each player.

Well that rules out user error, have to check  ;D

I would look at the restrictor plates, are they both identical and aligned the same way?  Maybe try swapping them and see if it moves the problem to the other controller.  That would isolate the issue or rule out the plates.

Is the joystick hitting anything?  CP top, plexi, etc?

You could do the same thing with the wire harnesses?  Swap them and see if they are the issue?

I'm just throwing out ideas that might help locate the issue.

I agree with this, I'd suggest just swapping the wiring without physically moving the sticks.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Make sure the restrictor plates on the bottom are fully seated.

You should be able to hear the click of the switch when a direction engages.
Compare how far each joystick needs to be pressed in a direction before you hear the switch click.
That should tell you if there is a difference between them.

I have two of these joysticks being delivered today.  I've used the JLFs these are based on before, but this is my first time with GGG version.
I'll see if there is anything unique about them that would cause one to behave differently than the other.

It might be easier to swap/remap the controls in MAME first.

Software-swapping P1 and P2 controls leaves all the connections/wiring the same and allows you to test for encoder and software issues before moving on to intermittent wiring/hardware issues.   :dunno

For what it's worth, I had similar issues with my Competition joysticks.  It turned out the 1st player was "broken in" more than the 2nd player.  I switched them to allow the 2nd player to be used more on the 1 player side.  Now they both play equally well.

a couple other things I thought of since posting last....

The center portion of the restrictor can be rotated for 4-way mode.  Make sure P2's isn't rotated to form a diamond instead of a square.
Received mine and the center portion does not rotate like the JLFs.  This is actually a good thing as nobody uses the 4-way mode on JLFs.

Not sure if these sticks would even function with the actuators in upside down, but it's something to check.
The actuator is the plastic part that hits the switches.  Make sure the narrower part is toward the bottom.
