What would you put in a dedicated SHMUP cab?
« on: November 28, 2014, 11:01:51 am »
So while I'm working on fixing my 1945 Strikers Board I'm contemplating what I might eventually put in my dedicated SHMUP cab.

Here are some potential candidates (based on what's available, JAMMA,  and semi reasonably priced, I'm not paying $1200 for DoDonPachi or $600 plus for other CAVE titles regardless of how awesome they are)

Samurai Aces
Raiden 2  (bonus, not emulated perfectly in Mame)
Nostradamus
Mission Craft (bonus, not emulated perfectly in Mame, and very cheap)

What would your hypothetical SHMUP cab have?

Here's some I'd love to have if they were available and I was rich

Grind Stormer/ V-5
Mushihimesama
DonPachi
Fixeight
Macross Plus

@ opt2not Well that certainly narrows it down   ;)

@ Louis, I saw Esp Ra. De. On eBay for $ 400a bit rich for my blood but an awesome game. I suck at it though. I Like some of the others on your list as well.

I put Macross in mine. There was a Macross Plus board on eBay recently I bid on. I tapped out at $150, it went for $271.

I put a couple modded/ region free consoles hooked up via component cables and an AV switcher to a 25" flat class CRT.  I'm using this list to build my 360 collection: http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/jayc/lists/xbox-360-shmups/56970/
I'm using this list to build my PS2 collection: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sony/ps2/the-playstation-2-ps2-shmups-library
I have an original xbox with a nice mame collection to fill it in.

I really enjoy many of the arrange modes and console specific versions that are not available in mame or on the boards.  If I were to do it all over again, I'd do it in a candy.

Make some JAMMA adapters and throw some old school in with the new school. Exerion is one of my favorites.

I know it's cool to love DoDonPachi (and I do enjoy it), but Dangun Feveron still remains my favourite Cave shooter to play.

If I HAD to choose a favorite Cave game I would probably go with Guwange. Donpachi is also in the conversation though, I think I even prefer it to any of it's sequels.

Of course if you count their days as Toaplan, there are even more brilliant shmups. Batsugun, Grindstormer, and Fixeight to name a few.

+1

So, MAME and  J-Pac is not an option?  You'd have a ton more shmups to choose from.  Also, Dreamcast emu has a ton of great vertical shmups for it.

Its an option I have considered but the only extra pc I have doesn't have a pci e slot for Arcade VGA and isn't fast enough to play sh3 Cave games correctly nor Brave Blade and a few others.

I could get a transcoder and run groovymame, which is what I will likely do in my mame cab but for this project I'm keeping it Jamma so a i can learn all the skills. A newb like me must learn to run power, discharge monitors, do cap kits, perform simple board repair, wire a coin door, etc.

Plus I am going to do my best to try and impress a few legends in the process.  After all isn't that part of the draw of keeping a project thread?

Another quality Toaplan game.  I've always found it to be batshit hard though. There is a board going on eBay for either the first or second one (can't remember) for about 350ish. I don't know if I like it that much.

Just build a GroovyMAME cabinet and you don't have to choose. You can have them all.

Oh, and Raiden 2 is emulated perfectly in MAME now.

I'll have to update my romset and compile the latest mame version. I'm on 150, but I also have wanted to play the Glad on my mame setup so I will have to check out the Raiden II and DX emulation while I'm at it.

My current project is staying Jamma though, although I do plan on using Groovymame for my Mame cabinet when I begin that project.

You can keep the cab JAMMA and still use GroovyMAME. I have a JAMMA cabinet and just use a J-PAC. I can easily swap between JAMMA PCBs and the PC.

I prefer to games on PCBs that are not emulated at all or emulation is far from correct. Good example is Heated Barrel.

Sky Shark is my constant go to. Frustrating, but satisfying at the same time. If we are talking real classic then Galaga and Space Invaders...maybe Zaxxon too. I think this is more of a "What's your favorite shooter" thread.

Galaga and Space Invaders aren't really SHMUPs IMO. But they are the forefathers of SHMUPs...

Mentioning DoDonPachi in threads like this is almost becoming cliched, but every time I play that game I'm reminded that it deserves the hype.

Cybattler and Gunlock (aka Rayforce) are two shoot-em-ups that I think are really cool but don't seem to get mentioned very often.  Both games feature mechanics that are "non-standard" in the genre, which helps differentiate them a bit from the homogeneous masses.

I'd totally rock Gunlock in my cab. Love the lock on feature.

Cybattler is good, I should devote some more time to it to see if it grows on me..  I seem to always find myself, perhaps unfairly, comparing it with Brave Blade.

juno first

Galaga 88
