DIY electronic dartboard help wiring
« on: November 27, 2014, 01:52:42 am »
Hi, all.

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

I have an old electronic dartboard that I want to interface with my computer to display scores, similar to the Arachnids found in bars.  I also have a USB keyboard that I've torn apart, which appears to be wired in a 13x13 matrix.  The dartboard seems to be wired in an 8x8 matrix.  The dartboard takes 3 x AA batteries, so I am using a cut up USB cable to provide 5ish volts to the dartboard, which seems to work nicely.

It is really just as simple as soldering the dartboard ribbon cable to the contacts on the USB keyboard?  I am looking for some confirmation from this community before dedicating my Thanksgiving break to a futile attempt at getting this to work.  I can handle the software end, as in mapping the keys to the positions on the dartboard.  Anything else I am missing?

Also, if I was going to make a breadboard to connect all this together, what could I buy to "hold" the plastic cable from the dartboard in place? And the USB keyboard -- Instead of soldering all the wires, I think it would be convenient to have something that resembles a PCI slot on the motherboard where the USB keyboard board could be held in place.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.
