Issue with 60 in 1 Wire Harness - Please help!!
« on: November 19, 2014, 04:05:03 pm »
Normally when I build my bartops I use a standard 60-1 wire harness but I decided to go a different route.  This time I had a friend build one for me with only the wires I need.  I use two buttons, one joystick, player 1 and player 2 plus the speaker wires.  Everything else I don't need.  So he built one for me with only those wires.  He kept pin#28 for the ground so I could use it.

I use a computer power supply because it comes with the required plug and play connector that hooks up to the board.  I don't have to worry about hooking it up to a standard power supply.  Now, I'm coming across where the buttons and joystick don't work.  The game powers on and I see the image on the screen but none of the buttons or joystick are working.

My question is do I need all those wires on the standard wire harness in order for the buttons and joystick to work even though I am not using all them?  Or maybe I missed a grounding wire somewhere?  Can anyone help or provide suggestions?? I already tried to remove the ground wire from the harness on position #28 and grounding it directly to metal (power supply) but still no luck.  Any ideas??

Thanks in advance.

You probably missed a ground for the buttons and joysticks.   There are sometime multiple grounds in the harness that have to be hooked together at a single point.  Check the continuity of you grounds to the buttons and joysticks with a multimeter.

Bob is probably right on this. Sounds like a ground (loop) is not connected. When you think you have things all hooked up, put the board in test mode and go to the last screen where you can test all the controls to see what's working and what doesn't.

Thanks guys for your response.

It's my understanding that position #28 on the harness is the ground which I had hooked up to the buttons and joystick.  Is there another ground? I'll have to look at the manual.

Here is how it looks right now.  The circled wire is the ground I'm using (position #28).

Thanks again for your help.

There are more ground connectors on a jamma harness than just position 28.    Did you check to see if you switches have a ground wire with continuity to your harness as suggested?

I would have used position A, B, 1, or 2.
