Other emulators in cabinet

I'm trying to determine what other emulators work well(other than MAME) and are worthwhile for within an arcade cabinet - I guess most might be okay minus the consoles ones such as N64 per se were gameplay is best played with a game pad controller.

Atari 2600/5200/7600, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis (Megadrive), Colecovision, etc work fine because of the quite similar button layout.

You can put the console games on there Rich but might find that some of the gameplay is too long to be standing at an arcade.  Like say Zelda for NES.  Ive gotten to the point where I dont play my console games and I am now in the process of creating an emulation PC that I can hook up to my tv to play.

I think I will avoid console emulators for the reason noted.  I will build a small PC for the living room and hook it up to a big screen.  Better stick with the older game systems were there are simple controls such as ones listed in this thread.

Yep. I agree, and would do as suggested by jd. Leave arcade for arcade. A raspberry pi is dirt cheap to hook up to the TV for console emulation, and you can play those long games from the comfort of your couch as they were meant to be played.

There are a lot of unique console games that work extremely well on a 2-player upright.  Not all console games are 1-player lengthy password-save text-ridden rpgs.  Frequented 2 player simultaneous games at my house for the last decade with the kids are...

Twisted Metal 2 (psx).  If you have 6 buttons this is very playable, and fun in co-op mode.
The Unholy War (psx).  Kind of an updated Archon.
Streets of Rage 2, Toe Jam n Earl, Zombies Ate my Neighbors (Genesis)
Gunfight, Freeway, Frogs n Flies, Combat, Fishing Derby (Atari 2600)
Dogdaze Deluxe, Seawolf 2, Archon, Beachhead 2, International Karate, Match wits (Atari 800)
Pro Wrestling (NES)

Yes popsicle.  I agree.  There were a handful of games on the console that would work for a stand up arcade.  For instance Wrestlemania and Ice Hockey on the NES.  But for my needs I played more lengthy RPG's and that was why I made the choice to go with another PC for my console emulation.

Rich may need another PC just that reason.  It is all essentially going to come down to his needs.

demul (naomi emulator) is a arcade based system with a ton of good game (marvel vs capcom: 2 is the most notable game). Model 2 is mostly racing but it does has some beat em up and fighting. same with Model 3. Taito Type X is a pain to set up but it has some good fighters as well (kof13 and SF4). Follow and use gigapig's tutorial and file from the FTP to make it alot easier to add Taito X. PS2 emulator is good for some fighting games like soul caliber and tekken 5. same with dreamcast. lots of good fighters there.

It baffles me why some people never stray from MAME.

I set up most of the cartridge based consoles on my old setup, but I hardly ever played them.  The new cab is limited to only arcade games and "arcade-ish" Steam PC games like Super Street Fighter IV and Mortal Kombat Komplete.

I plan on having x-arcade control and 4 super nintendo controllers with usb adaptors.
I'll get stools or I can sit on the couch and still the screen in the cabinet for console gaming....or maybe  i won't mind standing a bit..i sit all day at work.
I know there are some small computers out there i can put by my tv in the living room..but..I have enough wires there already...and i want an all in one cabinet.
Aside from NES and SNES ..I love the visual pinball and dosbox (with dfend software) emulators.

Just keep those controllers plugged in all the time, or you're going to forever be remapping things.

I think that's why 99% of us have given up on console games on arcade cabs, especially if you had grand designs of playing them on the original controllers. I have USB Atari, NES, and SNES controllers gathering dust right now because of that.

How well do those USB SNES controllers work Yots?

Granted, I didn't use them very much because of the whole USB issue, but when I did, they felt OK.

they are original snes controllers connected to adaptors sold by retrousb.com
they are great!   if you try playing atari games with them though it's like cheating. part of  the nostalgia of the atari 2600 was how challenging the game was trying to use a joystick.
I'm tempted to leave the 2600 off of my cabinet and use my original one for this reason...It'd be hard to play a Playstation game with them.  missing 2 buttons..could add some more controllers if needed.
