Say your building a dual stick project (Opinions)
« on: November 14, 2014, 01:03:15 pm »
I love how I tend to plan future builds when my first is still far from completed, but after seeing Randy's Dominux sticks I think I'd like to have a nice Dual Stick cabinet.  I'd want it to cover the obvious, Robotron, Black Widow etc.  But if I'm going to the trouble of making a unique dual stick project it would need to support SMASH TV and 2P Karate Champ as well.

My question for you is how would you arrange the panel for those purposes?  My first thought would be to have P1 Joystick 2 and P2 Joystick 1 close enough so that single player games could be played from center? thoughts?  Would you put any other buttons on a panel like this?

There's a list of dual joystick (non-analog) games here.

Quite a few of the games on the lilst use buttons in addition to the standard admin buttons like Coin, Start, etc. (see list for details)

LMK if you come up with any more games to add to the list.   ;D

That would be pretty cool, but switching between the 1p and 2p setups will be a pain.
Changes to the control scheme would have to be done before launching the game.

...unless you are using XP and have a copy of MAME that has been compiled to allow for virtual keyboard input from autohotkey.  (ahk doesn't block keys in anything newer than XP).
Then it might be possible to use autohotkey to change the controls while in-game.

Well I was thinking I'd just set the controls per game in MAME since there aren't that many dual stick games.

Yeah, changing per game isn't that big of a deal and takes 30 seconds a single time.   As I play each 4-player game I even go through the setup of making them 1 2 3 4 on the board and it only takes a minute.

Here is the one I'm working on for that exact reason.

yeah, but if player 1 has the option to either use their 2 joysticks or their right joystick and player 2's left joystick (for the sake of being centered), one set of mappings isn't going to work.  You'd need things mapped differently for a 2 player game.  Otherwise player 2's left joystick is still messing with P1's controls.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were trying to accomplish.
I thought you wanted the option of standing centered with the screen when only playing a one player game.

Right I was thinking to force the single player games to be played from center and creatively using CP artwork to illustrate that point to guests.

Most people seem to do a pretty similar setup for a 2-player dual-stick CP. Here's my entry into the mix:
