USB Ports - 2.0 or 3.0?
« on: November 10, 2014, 09:17:16 am »
Hi Guys,

I know USB 3.0 is faster for general purposes, but with arcades and USB controller compatability etc... is it recommended to use 2.0 or 3.0 on the outside of the cabinet?

I'm planning to put one of these together for the back of my bartop... they seem to be able to add USB, Ethernet, HDMI and a bunch of other formats into a single wall panel:

www.certicable.com/wallplate_configuration

Thanks,

Owen

2.0 would probably meet all your needs.

Agreed. The only advantage I would see in 3.0, is if you plan on commonly transferring files from USB 3.0 devices.

Stop being cheap.  You've already pissed away a ton of money, go for 3.0.

Thanks guys!

pbj, this has nothing to do with money. It has everything to do with compatibility. Certain arcade-friendly hardware has had issues with USB 3.0. As such, I was asking which is better for compatibility.

I'm building an overkill bartop with an i5-4670k and GTX 660. This isn't about saving money

I have experienced first hand some nasty compatibility issues with USB 3.0, causing BSODs and what not.

And like others said, USB 3.0 is only going to benefit large file transfers...

Why not both?
