  • I want to build my own bartop arcade!
Hello,

I am totally new when it comes to building my Mame Cabinet. Currently, I am simply trying to configure software and get some basic hardware going before I dive into building the cabinet. I've been doing this by running GroovyUME on a Sony PVM 20" monitor.

I just got my hands on a brand new billabs BL25C90T 25" (24.8") monitor, and, I know this may sound silly, but I don't actually know how to connect it to my PC so that 1.) I get a picture and 2.) I don't fry the thing by not having enough power, or too much power, running to it.

It is supposedly a tri-sync monitor that can do 15-31khz. It came with a VGA cable and has a standard 15 pin VGA connector on it.

What I'd really like to know is how to power it. It's not like the sony PVM that has an electrical cord that I simply plug into the wall. I do see a molex connector on it that is split with other connectors, but I'm not sure that I can connect that to my PC power supply.

Does this monitor need it's own power supply, or can I connect it somehow to my PC power supply and run it safely?

I have a 450 w rosewill power supply running my PC.
Also, windows xp x64 edition
Intel Celeron 3.0 Ghz (Ivy Bridge) dual core
500 GB Western Digital HDD
Gigabyte mobo
3 case fans
AMD Radeon 4350 with CRT_Emudriver.

I can post pictures as well when I'm at home.

Thanks for your time and help. Please let me know if anything needs clarification.

All the modern crt are full range ac so they can run direct from mains supply worldwide, any voltage from 95 to 265vac will run them
you monitor should have come with a mains cable

chassis max resolution will be 640 x 480

This is how new I am: I'm not even sure what you mean by "mains." I'm attaching some pictures that I hope may help.

1. and 2. - This is the spec sheet and schematics that came with the monitor. No other documentation was provided.
3. A picture of where I plug the one molex connector into.
4. Simply a pick of the VGA connector and 10 pin connector - both of these cables were provided, though I would have solder a bit for the 10pin connector.
5. A picture of the molex connector power cables, and 6. a picture of my PC power supply connectors. Not only are they NOT three pins, but they the casing is signficantly smaller as well. I would not be able to plug the arcade monitor molex connectors into this.
7. The main connector that I would plug into the 100-240 vac connection on the arcade montitor.
8. Three pin molex connectors that I'm not sure where or how to attach.

So my question now is what do I do with these cables and connections? And do I need to purchase an additional "arcade power supply" that has the correct molex connectors?

I have additional questions about this monitor as well, but for right now, I'm looking for somewhat of a guide of how to properly connect everything and power the monitor itself.

Thanks to all who contribute and help out.

I got the monitor powered. I cut off one end of the molex connectors and simply spliced it to a standard appliance cord. However, now I am not getting a picture from the PC using a DVI-VGA adapter and running crt_emudriver. What do I need to do to get a picture on this. I have tried just about everything I can think of. The picture is simply a blue screen.

Thanks.

I don't. I've tried everything I can think of, and have tried every port as well (DVI and VGA ports on the radeon HD4350 as well as the DVI and VGA ports on the motherboard).

It does boot fine on another screen. I use a dell crt monitor and it boots fine on that, and I also can connect it to a Sony PVM 20" monitor (using the same DVI port), by unplugging the dvi-vga adapter and using a DVI to BNC breakout cable found here http://pccables.com/cgi-bin/orders6.cgi?id=ID17477274&action=Showitem&partno=00679. Of course, the Sony PVM does not display a 31khz signal, but it will display a 15khz signal just fine.

Well, I'm happy to say that I've finally gotten this monitor to work. I feel somewhat like a dummy, but I did read on another post as well that a user had to simply change cables. It turns out, the monitor doesn't like the cable it was shipped with! I bought a new DVI-VGA adapter and a new VGA cable and it worked. I found a guide to tweak some of the picture settings and the monitor is looking nice so far.

I can post pictures after I get home from Thanksgiving break.

I do have a couple more issues though and would appreciate the continued help and advice.

1.) Again, using CRT_emudriver and groovyume 0.155, I adjust the monitor to look nice at 640x480p (31.5 khz) but then when I go to run a 15khz game, the picture seems "squished" horizontally with black pillar bars on either side and the screen is also pin-cushioned. Should I adjust the screen for a 640x480i display instead? Then what would happen when I would play a VGA game? Would it be overly stretched?

2.) I suppose Windows XP x64 edition boots at 800x600? The screen is fuzzy when the bios screen first starts, but then when the windows xp logo comes up, it looks fine. I assume I should simply wait to power on the monitor correct?

I know he's on this forum as well, but MK3Fan, through facebook, has been a big help to me as well.
