touchscreen games
« on: October 30, 2014, 12:20:14 pm »
Yesterday, I picked up a few old pos terminals. They are Celeron 1.5ghz, 2gb ram, Windows xp, with 15" touchscreen. They are small, all in one units that would easily detach from their base and be wall mountable.I'm trying to decide what to do with them.

I'd like a wall mounted jukebox..I'm not sure if I want to build an entire unit with speakers, or just use as an interface to Google play music, which would play through my home theater via Chromecast.

Is like to use one as a touchscreen gaming system, like megatouch, but in not sure which way to go with software....any advice?

The viewing angle is very good on these, I'm tossing around the idea of a small cocktail cabinet, but the touchscreen would be a waste in something like that...

These aren't super powerful, but should handle classics work no problem

What should I use them for?

I'd like to have a Bejeweled/Touchscreen cab!

If I had one of those I would try to buy put win7 on it.  Do you know if the touchscreen will work on win7?

This topic right here may sway you to turn either one into a Jukebox:

You could load DOS on that sucker for a cheap and functional Jukebox.

I'd like to have a Bejeweled/Touchscreen cab!

If I had one of those I would try to buy put win7 on it.  Do you know if the touchscreen will work on win7?

i havent tried windows 7, but they have windows 7 license key stickers on the back of them, so i'm going to assume it would work.  i just figured with the slow processor and only 2gb of ram, i figured xp would run better than 7....but i'll probably try it on one just to see how it goes.  I havent opened one up yet, i'm hoping to be able to upgrade the ram.

i'd love to do the touchscreen gaming setup, the problem with an android emulator or even popcap games, is the user interface.  I want something that my 5 year old can operate easily using only the touchscreen.  ideally i won't have any other controls connected.  I havent really looked into it yet, i just figured i'd post here since i couldn't have been the first person to want to do this.

For something relatively simple and enjoyable, I'd suggest IGT Slots.  I have one loaded on a touchscreen, called Wolf Run.  It's got a bunch of slot machines, from the older 3-reels with bars, cherries, etc., to the ones that have 25 paylines.  The sounds are really good and very authentic. One of the more entertaining machines in the group is State Fair.

I just found what appears to be a 4 pack of slots on amazon, for download, which includes State Fair along with Day Of The Dead, Jolly Roger and Carnival of Mystery.  Might be worth a try for you.

im not sure about the slots, never played anything like that before....i'm gearing this more towards a system for the kids to play.

so far i have installed:
simple touch front end (awesome)
zuma
bejeweled
plants vs zombies
yahtzee
slingo (stupid game but my wife likes it)
angry birds

my kids are very excited....so much so that they keep fighting over it.  i took a few pics. (attached below)

They are TouchDynamic Breeze All in one units
it is an Intel Celeron M 1.5ghz
2gb ram
intel 82852/82855 video card
160gb hard drive
15" ELO touch screen
Windows XP Pro with Windows 7 pro license sticker

the units were used as pos terminals at a country club and are in great working order, and in pretty good physical condition.  THey take a little time to clean up, they have to be removed from the domain, new local admin user accounts setup, pos software removed, misc.  I got a group of them from a friend for a reasonable price, but i also did some computer work for him in trade. I know they computer isn't super powerful, but being an industrial grade all in one with a touchscreen, they are perfect for a jukebox or casual gaming system. They have a vesa mount on the back so they could easily be removed from the base and wall mounted. Someone asked if i would be willing to sell one...so if I were to sell one, what would be a reasonable price to ask?

I ended up using simple touch front end on two of them with a handful of games for the kids to play.  i don't think i'm going to try to build any cabinetry to put them in, i'm just going to leave them as they are as portable casual gaming systems to get out when we have people over.    I picked up a few budget pc games at a local bargain store, most of them didn't work too well with the touchscreen, but here is what i have so far:

bejeweled
zuma
Scrabble
yahtzee
Slingo
Mahjongg
klondike solitaire
plants vs zombies
and a few other random puzzle games.

Now i'm moving on to the jukebox.  my wife found a place for me to hang it in our dining room, which suprised me, but i'm not arguing.  I'm a little torn on which direction to go.  i've looked through the project announcment threads for jukeboxes and i've seen many great projects of various types....i'm just not sure which way to go.  some of them seem to just be a touchscreen mounted on the wall, some are enclosed in some kind of cabinet and others are floor/table top models.  wall mounting seems to be the best choice for me, but i'm not sure if i want to just hang the pc on the wall, or build some kind of enclosure for it.  then comes the speakers....should i make an enclosure with speakers built in, or just run it to the home theater system in the next room?    if running it remotely, should i go with some kind of bluetooth option, or just run cables through the wall?    if i go with local speakers, do i modify a set of pc speakers, or find some kind of amp and use some car speakers that i have lying around?

also, i can't seem to figure out which software to go with...i've looked through the wiki and the sticky post in the jukebox thread, but that info all seems to be several years old.  what touchscreen jukebox software do you prefer?

I built a wall mount that outputs sound to my home theatre system. It's my favorite build.

did you make a project thread?  i've looked through so many lately, i don't remember which one was made by who.  how did you handle the audio output?  cables through the wall or some kind of wireless method?
