Gaplus, great game
« on: October 26, 2014, 12:34:32 am »
Some how, I have managed to get this far in life without playing this game.
I guess I always just assumed it was a galaga bootleg like gallag or something. It was never a well known game and we've never had one around my area.
But I was visting Funspot this weekend and saw it there. I decided to give it a try and I found it to be a very fun gam .

We visit Funspot one weekend a year and I always try to focus my time there (when I'm not chasing my son around) on one particular game.
One year, I focused on improving my skills on Gyruss.
Another year, I played Wacko for the first time and mostly stuck to playing that every chance I had.
A couple of years ago, I was introduced to the Glob for the first time.
This years take away game is definitely Gaplus

I've been a big fan of this game since I ran across it while stationed in Germany in the 80's.  IMHO, it's the best in the "Galaxian" series.  It's literally the second game I play, or the first, if I'm not in the mood for Robotron  ;D

I definitely agree.  If folks haven't checked this one out, they don't know what they are missing.

Yes, I definitely prefer it over galaxian and galaga also.

I actually discovered this gem as "Galaga 3".  But then realized GaPlus is the same game.

Have you guys seen the trick where you can upgrade your ship to the fast shooting ship?  I love how they throw tribute to the Galaga fast shooting hack.  It happens in the 1st minute of this video:

I discovered this game during my college years in the late 90s.  It was in my university's rec area and drew my interest despite the other current arcade games around it.  After years of play, I never knew about that fast shooting trick.  Thanks for sharing DeLuSioNal29.

I just read about that trick the other day after looking more into the game.
The name was changed to galaga 3 for better recognition.
Because this game was released in 84 as arcades were losing popularity, they hoped a name change
Would help sales.

Gaplus is one of my all-time favorites. Its one of the games which were never really popular in arcades but are great Mame games. Another great example of this is Bal Cube which is a different genre but a great game which I reckon nobody had heard of until Mame emulated it.

I like Bal Cube but you're right, I never heard of it until Mame.

Great game.

I doubt anyone cares, but I made up a Gaplus bezel that mimics some of the elements of the marquee. If interested you can find it over at MameWorld:
