Virtua Formula on original hardware
« on: October 18, 2014, 02:58:45 pm »
Hi guys,

I have a 4 player Virtua Racing setup with the Live Monitor on top.  Once in a blue moon, I do some internet digging to see if any new parts are available or what not.  I've had it for around 12 years, and it always gets a lot of play when we have parties.  Driving games + competing against your friends right next to you still has appeal to kids and adults alike.

I just recently discovered that Virtua Formula is apparently emulated in MAME (I knew VR was...) and apparently also those ROMs are out there.

VF has a bit cooler attract mode (spans multiple monitors, where VR does not), and for many years I've wondered if it would work in regular VR setup, or if there would be errors or what not due to not having all the hydraulics and such.

Does anyone know if VF roms will work in the original VR hardware?  Is there a security chip or anything else (emulated or suppressed by MAME) that would prevent the VF roms from working in a VR boardset?

I have no idea how much it would cost to get all the ROMs burned, but if the cost was reasonable I think I'd like to switch things up by running the Virtua Formula ROMs.

Thanks!
Wade

If i remember correctly we tried that on a VR Twin some time ago, and it did sort of work. The VR lamps stoped working, though.
The additional hardware (for the hydraulics) is "optional" for the program code to work.

*EDIT* we had problems with the force feedback on one converted system though.
