If you're anything like me, you'd have been absolutely gutted when you heard that Sony closed down Studio Liverpool (formerly Psygnosis), the guys who made all the Wipeout games.

I randomly stumbled across this today and it made me feel like a bit of the Wipeout legacy still lives on. Hopefully it will be awesome. Great tune as well.

Thanks for the share!

Wipeout was the first PS1 game I ever bought.

The game was originally announced as SlamJet Racing, says The Escapist, and will be released on Ps4, Xbone and PC.

Wipeout 2097 was the game that convinced me to jump ship from the Saturn to the PS1. I loved my Saturn, but I can remember the first time I saw Wipeout 2097 running on a mate's PS1 my jaw just hit the floor over how good it looked. It still looks pretty awesome today if you have a bit of a fiddle with the settings in ePSXe.

Seems to be called Formula Fusion now.

Looks okay but for me it doesn't look half as good as Wipeout did back in the day, the ships just look fat and cumbersome, not sleek and elegant the way they were in Wipeout.

This at best looks mediocre and I just can't get excited about it which is a real disappointment.

Just read this about this game which doesn't surprise me :(

"R8 Games are NOT Studio Liverpool, they are a small team of people in the North of the UK, and one of their members happens to be an ex-Psygnosis dev, who briefly worked on WipEout 3 over a decade ago. He has tried and failed to make many projects based on his previous stints in the industry (google 'Criminalympics' for one particularly dreadful example), and is exploiting it to publish himself and further his own reputation. He is not interested in making games of real quality whatsoever, only to gain short-term profit whilst he lectures at a local university (and yes, he ropes his students into doing unpaid work for him, in exchange for 'industry exposure').

If you want to find the real remnants of Studio Liverpool, go and support Firesprite. Because this... thing doesn't even come close to the real deal. The entire thing is a farce, and the amount of people that have been swayed by R8's lies is disgusting."

Time to fire up ePSXe and give Wipeout XL (2097) an airing me thinks - now THAT'S a game! :)

It's entirely possible that this could well simply be a cynical cash-in by some guy vaguely connected to the Wipeout series (and I agree the ships in this are a bit fugly compared to the ones in Wipeout), but I was getting enough of a Wipeout vibe from the trailer to be prepared to give this a chance. Hopefully it'll be more the sort of homage to the original Wipeout games that H2overdrive was to Hydro Thunder and not some guy mining a few more quid out of the Wipeout brand. it certainly looks quite nice in the picture below.

I'd take that "R8 Games are NOT Studio Liverpool", quote with a pinch of salt, it's just one guys opinion on an internet forum. Who knows, maybe he's another Ex Studio Liverpool employee who's got a major beef with the R8 games guy.
