Standing cab pedal placement
« on: September 27, 2014, 08:52:06 pm »
So I've been working for a couple of months now on an addition to my standing upright 2 player cabinet (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=138229.0) which would allow me to use it as a sit-down racing cab. After a lot of trade-offs that have come up (which I have found solutions to so far - e.g. the seat will need to be like 2.5-3 ft off the ground - this feels fine when you're riding but looks awk as hell when you look at it from the side), I am thinking it might be time to accept my sunken costs and build a sitdown cab (that could potentially share the A/V input from the regular upright - as i want to play many of the same games on both, but not re-wire all of the 360/pc cabling I did earlier).

The thought is that this sit-down cab can sit next to the standing cab and just have a couple of controller wires (DB9 probably), RCA, and an HDMI cord leading to it. I can leave space to make it a stand-alone cab if I want to later.

That's going to be a long term project. In the meanwhile, I was thinking I could create some sort of box structure to slide over my control panel area / front of cab to turn it into an upright racing cab. However, the pedals feel SO awkward. I have clubsport pedals (v2). I have tried leaving them flat on the ground, orienting them as if they were upright, different angles, etc. Anyone have advice on how to make those pedals feel comfortable? I can't see myself playing anything for more than 5 minutes like this.

I really like this place.  But if you want to visit a forum that has as many driving cabs as this forum has arcade cabinets, check out thewayiplay.com

They won't have many upright driving games. Mostly, they have sim racing cockpits.  While not the same, you will see a variety of ways to mount pedals.

i just use a high stool, a steering wheel in the middle of the cp and the pedals on an a small pedestal.

I just used some cheap after market pedals from the local car parts store and mounted the accelerator on a hinge and the brake direct to the old pedal stalk. You can see in the pic I raised the pivot point of the acc pedal to prevent leg cramp when playing

Useful link eric and thanks to SO & vandale for the feedback and images. Eric I see you went through/are going through a similar phase of "what do I do while I am getting a seat prepared?" :). I'm going to try a few more ways. It's possible that it felt awkward because I had the pedals directly under my wheel instead of a little recessed. If it doesn't work out that's fine, I'll do it the right way in a few months when I completely finish my upright cab. Thank you!!
