Rowe CD-100 pausing mid-songs?
« on: September 21, 2014, 07:53:26 pm »
I just got a Rowe CD-100, my first jukebox, and have been having some problems.

1. After adding about 20 of my own CDs and doing a full initialize the jukebox keeps stopping mid-song for about 3 seconds before continuing the song.

2. When selecting an entire album (i.e. "23 popular") sometimes it plays a track and then removes the disk and spins the carousel all the way around and puts it back on to play the next track.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

-H

Thanks for the reply.

It is happening on "store bought" CDs as well as CDRs, both of which played fine when I bought the machine a few weeks ago.

It did have a florescent tube starter pop and a few error codes pop up, but I replaced the starter and cleared the errors.

I also had to go through and reset the menus to put it in "Freeplay" mode, so I thought maybe I missed a setting when it went back to default (or whatever mode it went to after the surge)

I watched it happen with the door open and the "Board Error" light comes on and the disk stops spinning.  Sometimes it starts spinning again and starts playing, a few times it takes the disk of, puts it back in the rack, spins the rack and selects the same disk again and starts the next song..

I have not cleaned it, so what should I do about that?  Q-tip and ethanol on the laser?

No error codes show up on the front display and no errors in the report menu.

Thanks, will give that a try.

After I went through and ran all the "Clear error" type commands I could fine it played the same CD just fine.. it might be like me, just getting old.

I went through and did an error clear as well as a "Default Reset" and have played 15+ songs so far (most that had paused before) and it's worked perfectly.. so far.

Thanks for all the help, I'll let you know what happens.

Also, looking at the above picture, I don't see anything after the "CD-100", so does that mean this machine is a CD-100A or even earlier than that?

Thanks again,

the battery in the CCC is likely going south. they can cause all kinds of issues. measure it, it should be at LEAST 2.8 volts. if it's low you'll need to change it...which is a real bugger if you can't solder well. i remove the battery and solder in a 2032 battery holder to replace it. that way i can replace the battery no problems later on.

what happens is the CCC stores disk information in a NVRAM chip which is kept alive by the battery, if the voltage is low, the data gets corrupted.

EDIT: also, 4.3 is the latest version i believe.

Thanks guys!!

Since I hadn't done a Default Reset after that electrical surge that seemed to start all these problems I'm hoping that this will take care of it.

I'm a woodworker, not an electrical guy, so the idea of soldering something makes me a bit nervous (even though I know it's not that hard).

I'll keep you posted.  Now I'm looking forward to cracking a few beers and listing to it.

One more small issue:

In doing the default rest it was not letting me do an Album buy (by hitting the CD number + "Popular")

I went in to service mode and did #65 Album buy on and #67 Tracks in a row 25 but when I try to buy an album it still says "NOT ALWD NA".

(I did manage to turn free play back on)

the NVRAM holds data about the cd's such as how many tracks the CD has and how long each song is and stores it.

you'll have to do a full initialization (3-0-popular) it will scan all the CD and store it in NVRAM. the juke will be okay until you power off (where the dying battery will corrupt the NVRAM again)

I did a full initialize this morning and still getting the same error that full album purchase is not allowed.

I double checked and album buy is still set to on and max track numbers is also still set to 25..

Side note: any videos or posts (with pictures) about installing that battery holder on the CCC?

the original battery has tabs welded to the battery and is not removable unless you desolder it from the board.

what i do is replace it with a 2032 battery holder like this:

https://solarbotics.com/product/BHold2032/

it has tabs that stick out the bottom that match the original battery almost exact. you may need to file down the tabs to obtain a good fit.

i have dozens of dead motherboards from buckhunters and mega touches and whatnot. i usually just steal a battery holder off the board and use them for the CCC.

be sure to observe proper polarity (top of the 2032 battery with all the writing is positive.) be sure the tab that touches this part of the battery is soldered to the + side of the original battery.

it's not real hard if you are experienced in soldering. if not, it can be a little daunting. If you know someone who can do better than you, maybe get them to do it for you, or perhaps if you're a real novice and no nothing of soldering, see if you can find a local electronics repair shop or electronic parts store to trade you some coffee and doughnuts or a 6 pack of beer for doing it for you. if you think you will mess it up, it's best to leave it to someone with some skill. working CCC's are getting harder and harder to find without getting hosed 200 bucks to buy one used.

lord knows i've done electronics work for people for liquor.  :lol
