  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
My SF2 arcade machine has been running like a dream, but yesterday the game doesn't start, even though the marquee & lights all power up as usual?

Any chance it's a simple power supply issue? What are my first steps?

Any help is most appreciated!

Hereis a manual.

First things first is to check the wiring. That is the easy part.

Do you have another jamma board you can swap out to see if its the board?  Best of luck.

We need more details:
-  Exactly what version of SF2 do you have?
-  Is the board powering up?  If so, what do you see on the screen?

In the meantime, buy a multi-meter and check the power supply voltage to see if the board is getting the proper power.  Make sure you disconnect the Jamma harness just in case.  If the voltage checks out then it may be a suicide battery issue with the B board.  (White screen of death, black screen of death, etc).  Check the voltage of the battery on the board and make sure it's not dead.  You may need to have it "Phoenixed" if it is.

Here's some great info on Capcom boards that my buddy at RetrowareTV posted:

SF2, all except Super SF2 flavors, were CPS1 and didnt have a suicide battery.

There are a few steps to go through here.

You got power to the marquee light so you've got some kind of ac power present.

Are there any fuses to check.

Does the monitor appear to be powering up?
Do you hear the static charge?
Do you see the rear neck tube glow?

If the monitor is powering up, then the board may not be booting.
Make sure you've got 5volts at the board. (Should be like 5.1v, not lower than 5 volts and not higher than 5.2)

Does it play blind?
If you coin up, do you hear the game going on with nothing on the screen?
Could be a shot monitor. Monitors can be repaired.

Thanks everyone!

I'll first try to answer some of the initial questions:

(1) On powering up the cabinet, I DO hear the static charge and DO see the rear neck tube glow.
(2) The game DOES NOT play blind. I hear no game sounds at all and see nothing on the screen.
(3) I'm not 100% certain of the Capcom board but I took couple pictures here:

http://www.ryanpaulyoung.com/SF2/SF2-Board2.jpg
http://www.ryanpaulyoung.com/SF2/SF2-Back.jpg

(4) Unfortunately I do NOT have another jamma board to swap out or test.

I purchased a decent multimeter (sorry, this is my first rodeo  :banghead: ) and am very confused by what I see so far. While checking for AC voltage (testing the two AC screws on the Peter Chou power supply) I see the proper 128-131 volts. But when I set the multimeter to test DC (testing the ground screw and the +5V or +12 screw) I get between -0.74 volts and -0.80 volts??????? I get the same reading when I test anything on the board too  :dizzy:

Any ideas? If you guys need more detailed pictures, just let me know. And thanks so much for your help!!!!!!

That is a CPS1 board.  You say you dont have another jamma board, where are you located, maybe someone near to you can lend you one?

I live in a small illinois town called Greenville, about an hour outside of St. Louis. Should I test a different board before purchasing a replacement power supply?

sounds like the PS is bad by what you're describing. I say order one, worst case you'll have a spare.

I would pretty safely bet the power supply is just blown. Its very typical.
I would just order a new power supply.

http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=335_336&products_id=4

The one test you may want to do first is to remove the +5 and +12 volt lines off the ps and then test the power supply just to verify its not the board bogging down the voltage but I'm pretty sure you'll still find no voltage.

When you do change out the ps, its important to have it properly adjusted.
Without the board connected, quickly turn it on and maje sure you have 5-5.2 volts at the +5 volt output.
Then plugin the board and metter for voltage at the board this time (not at the ps)
You'll probably see about 4.8v or so.
Adjust the ps knob until you have about 5.1 v at the board.

Good luck
